Hi peeps,

I'm stuck to decide between buying a g1 980 or a gtx 1660ti. I can get the gigabyte g1 980 for £110 while the newer gtx 1660ti is around about 250 mark. Was wondering if the 980 still good in 2019 and worth getting as it's much cheaper or get the newer card? Or should I wait to get a 2070/2080 if I save up?

Thanks for reading.

If you want to save some money I'd consider a RX 580:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06Y66K3XD/?tag=pcp0f-21

But if you feel you want more performance then it is worth waiting a month for the RX 5700 release which will shake the market a lot, nVidia rumored to be bringing a RTX 2070 Ti and RTX 2085 to counter it.

All in all the GTX 980 is not worth it, it's a GTX 1060 3GB like performance card that does not support FreeSync, is significantly old and drivers wise kinda forgotten already which sucks as it doesn't benefit as much as the newer stuff on DX12 and Vulkan for instance... all that while consuming significantly more electricity.

980 is slightly more powerful than a 1060, quite a bit slower than the 1660ti, and very comparable to a RX 480/580. I consider all of these usable options for 1080p gaming in most cases.

Main rig: i7 8086K // EVGA Z370 Micro // 16GB Gskill TridentZ 3200Mhz CL14 // Sapphire Pulse RX 7800XT// a variety of noctua cooling // Corsair RM750x v2 //  Fractal Meshify C

Secondary rig: R5 3600 // MSI B450i Gaming Plus // 16GB Gskill FlareX 3200CL14 // MSI GTX 1080ti Gaming X // Cooler Master V650 // Fractal Meshify C

Audio setup: Audient iD4 // Adam A7X // Sennheiser HD 650 // Sennheiser HD 25-II // Audio Technica M50x // Sennheiser Momentum 4

Paring I suppose your talking about the spec of the rig? If it's that then I have a i7 6700k with 24gb ram, z270 mobo. I will be doing casual/competitive gaming in OW/Csgo, Assasins Creed, duantless, bdo etc.

I've always been drawn to Nvidia cards as I've had bad experiences with amd card most of them being cards overheating while in the same rig Nvidia cards stay at a low temperatures. Also I do have a freesync monitor so might consider reliable amd cards.

AMD video cards have gone a really long way since the Hawaii days, they are not overheating nonsense any more but just as good products as nVidia has to offer. the RX 580 is hardly behind a GTX 1660 and will give pretty much identical experience.

But FreeSync is also now supported on new Turing video cards, if you still wanna stick to nVidia you can do so keeping the feature too, I'd go for a RTX 2060 for it's amazing performance value, for only 315 pounds you get a card that is only 10% slower than a RTX 2070 with on pair performance of a GTX 1070 Ti while getting support for the latest and greatest features and drivers.

So it's up to you really, either ways I believe that waiting a little longer is a win-win, you'll be on reach of the RTX 2060 and maybe next month the RX 5700 is actually a great AMD promise.
