<WARNING: I am a Linux nerd>

 

I am on the horizon for a laptop. Please keep in mind, I do not want to buy these atm, as I have a lot of real life expenses to take care of first. Might be 6 months, might be a year. If you know of a newer core or aspect coming up, bark it up my tree!

 

With that in mind, here is what I am considering:

 

1. Must be AMD Ryzen. I despise Intel for my personal use. I can work with it, sure. But I personally will not buy anything i3/i5/i7/i9 with all it's vulnerabilities.

1a. I would like it to have Ryzen 5 3500, or similar. As it feels like the sweet spot between the 3 and 7. (3rd gen)

2. Graphics do not mean that much to me. I don't game that hard anyway. Just Fortnite, Minecraft, maybe some Overwatch if I am bored. Vega graphics should work great.

3. HDD/RAM, you can mostly upgrade that when needed.

4. Not a requirement, but I would like USB-C and/or Thunderbolt.

5. Touch would be a nice feature, but then again, not a need.

 

Use? I would be using this for testing different OS's as well as different software in VM's. Gaming is very minimal, as I have my desktop to do that.

 

Price? I am not currently sure on, but let's try to keep this under $1K

Inspiron 14 5000

Acer Aspire 3

We can't really give you any suggestions for Zen 2 based laptops, as they don't exist yet

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

Zen 2 hasn't even launched yet. Ryzen 2000 chips are called Zen+.

Any preference on weight, battery life and display size? Mind low sRGB display and non-upgradable RAM?
