Why does this video need to exist...

Microsoft came out with the book to promote their "home server" OS.  someone just made a video about it.

Do you have a desktop? id just make a file share on your desktop.

I'm on a budget of about $100
I have a Lenovo laptop to spare

you can just make a file share on the laptop if you want and disable sleep and its a simple file server. Give that a shot.

Budget? Speed needed? Space needed? What type of clients?

Id just get a synology or qnap nas if you want something simple

I would get like a used PC or those little computers like a raspberry pi kind of thing. The Synology things I hear good things about though.

Synologys work pretty darn well. Ive deployed a few. Good software, easy to use, ultra low power, good form factor. Great little nas box.

Thats what I do. You could also try things like ftp or something if you want

You probalby don't want ftp, sftp atleast, probably look into nextcloud if you want external access, if this is just for lan you probably want cifs.

Also some routers you can just plug in a USB drive and it is shared on your local network

If theyre both WIndows, make sure theyre both using the network profile Private Network. Also make sure theyre in the same Workgroup e.g WORKGROUP

Then under Advanced Sharing Settings, make sure that FIle & Printer sharing, and Network discovery are both enabled for the Private Network profile.
