Its so easy to build a computer that will out perform both of the "next Gen" consoles. here is my build that i threw together in about 20 mins by browsing newegg. i left out the OS because a think Linux or SteamOS will be a viable alternative(for gamers) to Windows within the next year.

if you have a better build please feel free to post it, i just found this entertaining.

Case: SilverStone SG06BB-LITE Black Aluminum front panel         ($50)

CPU: AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5GHz (4.1GHz Turbo)                        ($120)

GPU: HIS iCooler H775FS2G Radeon HD 7750 2GB                           ($90)

Memory:G.SKILL Value 8GB DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600                     ($75)

MOBO: ECS A960M-M3 AM3+ AMD 760G Micro ATX                          ($34)

PSU: Rosewill Stallion Series RD450-2-DB 450W                              ($45)

HHD: Western Digital WD10EZEX 1TB 7200 RPM                              ($60)

Optic Drive(optional)                                                                         ($20)

                                                                                                  TOTAL: $494

and i say the optic drive is optional because i do all my game buying on Steam.

I would personally take that extra $20 and throw it towards a better GPU, and get an optic drive later on.

other things not put into consideration here:

-Steam sales = games cheaper than you can get on console.

-the consoles require a $50 a year subscription, which a PC does not.

-ITS a freaking computer!!!!! lets face it. a huge majority of people that have consoles also have a computer somewhere in their house. if u build a computer, you have a computer and a gaming device in one!

Also im new to LTT so go easy on me lol Thanks!

Exclusively? Of course not. But there are still some decent games.

Hell, the way I see it, the Steam Machines will have a better launch lineup than the PS4/XB1 :P

I wouldn't trust that PSU.

EDIT:

  1. Mobo is M-ATX not M-ITX
  2. PSU will kill everything
  3. GPU will not last very long.

This is much better & it costs the same as a xbone.

It's never a console killer if it's in overall cheaper than one, without an OS and if it doesn't perform better.

Hard to beat the PS4 ($400), but going up against the XB1 ($500) is doable.

OS: Fedora 20 (such fast, much stable, many windows) + Wine (full windows compatibility)

You "know" that consoles are better than PC for a gaming experience? What? You can't do half what you can do on a PC, on a console. There are no mods, you cannot create your own content, the graphics you get are what you get etc. You can do everything on a console on a PC and much more. The same can not be said in reverse.

No, they would be better getting a stronger GPU out the gate.

I didnt know if it'd be better to go with a cpu and gpu or just an apu. I've heard good and bad about them. I guess you could go with an apu and could always upgrade with a r7 gpu later.

And why would steam make a gaming operating system and not have big game titles compatable? Sure they arent yet but the OS is also still very young and in Beta.

Ofcourse the ability of a PC to greatly outclass a console exists, just not at this pricepoint

Many of the implements are proprietary and have resulted from years of development and fine tuning. I dont hold out any hope that a linux based system will ever be able to support the complete breadth of game offerings.

Not always true.

Consistently though. There isn't a single PC exclusive that's worth mentioning ( aside from much older games ) IMO. Games like DayZ, Trine etc.. don't hold their weight when compared to the very well financed first and third party exclusives held on either console platform. Infact, it's outright depressing the amount of upcoming titles that will forever be out of PC's reach. I'm not surprised though, the player base for modern PC gaming is quite low.

As related to gaming, consoles are innately superior. They're better social platforms, they get more games, the games offered are always better optimized, and it's a superior platform for competitive gaming especially. Granted, you can't mod but considering my own experiences with modding I can take it or leave it. By the time any worthwhile mods surface most people have generally moved onto something else. This is just my opinion though, I do enjoy gaming on PC but my experiences aren't nearly as fun as they are on console. Mileage varies.

Assuming they have the budget, sure. My honest recommendation to most of my friends considering PC building is to have a budget of atleast 800USD so that insane compromises don't need to be made.

Just for kicks, here's my attempt:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2GcUL

Even if we're able to match the hardware of the new consoles, games will probably be a bit better optimized for them, so it's tricky to try and match the "gaming experience". Still, these are consoles are still new, and due to the limited selection of games, I think it's a little silly to pick one up so soon. In the year or two it takes for them to get a decent library, it'll be much easier to beat them in price/performance.

As related to gaming, consoles are innately superior.  Howso? They're better social platforms I fail to see how they are better social platforms. A PC has access to Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Teamspeak, Ventrillo and other services, TwitchTV and other live stream services, more massive online games witht he ability to have more than 64 people per "lobby" etc. they get more games Source?, the games offered are always better optimized Source?, and it's a superior platform for competitive gaming especially MLG and League competitions are on PC and have been for a long time. . Granted, you can't mod but considering my own experiences with modding I can take it or leave it.  By the time any worthwhile mods surface most people have generally moved onto something else So people have moved on away from titles like Dark Souls, Skyrim, GTA IV, Borderlands 1/2, and a myriad of other titles that have mods? Not that I have seen. Frankly in the PC world there are people and large communities who stick with older games. Games such as Garry's Mod which is old as dirt, Unreal Tournament, Wolfenstein:ET, Day of Defeat etc.. This is just my opinion though, I do enjoy gaming on PC but my experiences aren't nearly as fun as they are on console. Mileage varies.

If you're on this tight of a budget, you should buy mostly used (except PSU, storage, and if water AIO).

I wouldn't pay $90 for something as mediocre as the 7750. That could net you something significantly faster preowned with warranty.
