I am currently trying to decide whether to get a 4k monitor or an 8700k. The only thing that would stop me from getting the monitor is the fact that i wouldnt be able to run every game at high or ultra with a 6gb 1060...However i am leaning more towards the 8700k becuase then i can get a better gpu and 4k monitor in the future when they are not stupidly expensive.

Any and all suggestions very welcome.

How about neither and wait until next week?

As for the GPU:
You should have something like VEGA56 or so for 4K at least...

I 'm looking into a 4k HDR Screen as well. Haven't found a good deal at under 400€ or so. The good ones are a bit more expensive.

So why not get a new GPU first??

What's your current CPU?

You can just run games at 1080p on the 4k display without an issue.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Then there's really no reason to upgrade your CPU for gaming, I'd wait for Ryzen 3000 if you just want more cores.

Probably just grab any of the 4k IPS free-sync displays. Bigger the better if possible, 32" - 40" IMO

But surely if i cant get it running "smooth" in 4k then whats the point of having a 4k monitor

Watching videos and general daily use?

As well you can run a lot of games at 4k, I ran Resident Evil 2 Remake at 4k on an RX 580 with like low-medium settings 45+ fps.

Plus whenever new GPUs come out or down in price you can just pick one of those up.

Im sure that there will be a lot of 4k youtube videos happening but if i get a game e.g. ghost recon, then i would like to be able to play it at 4k in high-ish settings and my fear is that i wouldnt be able to do that

where are you scared of? as long as you keep voltage on the recommended range, the worst thing that can happen is that it gets unstable and shut off

then you restart, adjust a little and start again

That's fine, you shouldn't upgrade until the cards are on the table.

That said, I agree with @LukeSavenije A Freesync Screen is what you should be really looking for.

And if you don't have a console, the best is in the middle:

2560x1440p!!

That with a good Freesync Range screen is what you might want to take a look at.

As for Screen size:
27" is great for 1440p, I'd not go under 32" for 4k.

I read something a while back it went something like if your cpu is doing what you want then why make it work faster, it is only damaging it

if you do it wrong with like putting 2 volts through the core or something, but as long as you don't do stupid voltages, it won't damage anything

You might want to hit me after saying this but is freesync exactly?

something that makes gameplay smoother when you aren't hitting 60+ (or your refresh rate of choice) fps. if you're in a certain range, you'll always have smooth gameplay

I hate that Imperial stuff...

so around 60-90cm for the rest of the World.

Yeah, that's the normal stuff.

Not that much.

You have a bit more hight and better compatibility.

What Screen do you have right now?
Model Number and so...

But why you'd want a new screen??

correct. but you can shop around for a freesync monitor too, even through this is a amd created technology, it's sort of supported on nvidia 1000+ series too. there's a verified list, but outside the list it normally works too

TBH i might get that and get new PSU, instead of the new cpu, ram and motherboard. This is mainly because ive never upgraded my pc without in the end having to completly just reset it.
