I7 9800x vs i9 9900k

Hi guys, I’m planning a build primarily for video editing. I’m a tv and cinema editor and I work only with avid media composer.

My tasks are basically  editing and footage transcoding and I wouldn’t mind to do a little gaming when I have some spare time.

I don’t do any graphics or 3D work , just editing with proxy files that I make (4K pro res or dnxhd)

I was decided for an i9 9900k ( please don’t tell me about amd, avid doesn’t officially support any amd platform)  on a z390 designare from gigabyte ( for the two thunderbolt 3 ports ) then I noticed the i7 9800x , 8 cores 16 threads.

I won’t lie , I always wanted to go with the x299 platforms for two main reasons, pci express lanes and the possibility to upgrade my cpu with a 10 or more cores in the future.  Anyone know how the 9800x is compared to the 9900k?

In your opinion a possibile switch to x299 would make sense? In my opinion I could get more room for upgrades in the future but maybe I’m wrong.

I would appreciate some advices.

My budget for the cpu doesn’t allow me to get an i9 with ten or more cores at the moment.

(just in case you need to know my gpu of choice I’m going with an amd Radeon 7 or an rtx2080. I still have to make up my mind )

No, I don't think it's worth switching to X299. X299 is an overpriced platform that isn't really worth buying, an i9 9900K and a good Z390 motherboard should be good enough for your usage. I doubt you will run into any issues if you go for a 9900K over a 9800X since they perform about the same.

9800X has more PCIE lanes, 9900K is a bit faster due to ringbus architecture instead of mesh.

What about the future upgrades ? If I go x299 In one year I could go with a faster processor, with z390 I know that the 9900k is the fastest cpu I can get.

X299 is able to handle more than 64GB of memory. Most of the HEDT cpu have more than 16 PCIe lanes and can therefore support multiple gpu each running x16. A number of the cpu have more than 8 cores.. If any of these features are important, then X299 might be a good choice.
