Z390 recommendations.

Hi all,

 

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of the Asus maximus XI code, intel Z390? 

Or a similar priced mobo? 

Currently working on choosing things for a new build. Budget on the mobo is max of £350/$450

Build will be for gaming and photo/video editing.

The extreme boards are E-atx I believe. Need an atx board :)

Not even for the extreme if you ask me. Same 5 phase as the Gene, but when you're on the largest form factor you compete against everything else, including those ATX models from other brands which is not only just as powerful if not more so, cheaper as well.

In shorts, avoid ASUS as all their boards are overpriced due to being behind the competition at same price point, the best value motherboard for you if you're considering the Hero XI would probably be the z390 Aorus Pro

Do you have any recommendations for a decent z390 ATX board. I checked out the list on the forums but I'd like some information behind those decisions. Not a motherboard expert by any means. Just need a good strong mobo for future overclocking. 4k gaming + photo and video editing. Thanks for replies guys. Appreciated. (I can save a bit more if I get a genuinely decent product).

Ok, 

 

So been looking around. Does this mobo have 4phase or 8phase?

Also the Formula has an intergrated VRM Waterblock but can this be used as a passive heat sink? If this is a good board I'll go for it and divert the money into an aio. With the scope to do a custom loop in the future.

brand name is kinda a big deal in marketing, you should take that into account, but i agree on looking for other stuff. (its a little bit sarcasm for the OP's not you)

To be honest. I had trouble with a gigabyte and MSI boards in the past. But the last 2 Asus boards have never let me down. Just been perfect.

Things changed A LOT, ASUS was indeed good on te x99 era but they have taken the Razer strategy of investing in marketing and branding over actual quality since Skylake era.

 

The Gigabyte Aorus Master sounds like what you're after being honest...

I do get what your saying. But I despise the gigabyte bios.

Done alot of research overnight. And yes I agree most of the maximus line up isn't upto par.

But then I found the apex with a very good VRM array. Thoughts on that board?

The Apex is fine, if you're okay paying so much more just so you do get a good product then it's on you... Like my brother did buy the Maximus XI GENE because even though expensive as hell it was the best Micro-ATX board on the market.

 

So yes the Apex will be a true high end motherboard without flaws that will allow you to reach 5ghz on an i9 9900K but the same could be achieved with cheaper board without the branding over-tax... it's up to you now.

You all seem to be very anti-asus. Yes I get the price seems to be a massive sticking point. But after researching the VRM. I don't see any boards bottlenecking 9900k, no massive failures. No alarming temperatures. No poor quality components. I just don't understand all the hate lol.

Also tweaktown are recommending a good portion of the maximus range. So what gives. Is all the hate simply down to 4phase vrm(which I've seen nothing concrete that actually hinders performance at 5.0ghz). And price?
