Intel i5 4590...what is the best gpu match?

Right now I have a pc with an intel i5 4590 3.3GHz (no overclocks, my motherboard does not support it) and a gtx 970 4gb graphics card. I'm trying to decide whether my cpu can take a gpu upgrade, or if I'm already bottlenecking my cpu. Anybody else done tests for this cpu on what gpu best fits this speed?

You won't get far before a 1080p GPU bottleneck

Maybe like a 1660 or RX 590 will do? However those are both not that much higher performance than the 970

there really very limited option to upgrade cpu, used i7 desktop cpu are too expensive, you may look into i7 laptop modded cpu for a little cheaper and weaker, but imo not worth the risk.

other than changing the whole platform for upgrade, theres really no obvious way to solve your bottlenecking cpu,

depends on what programs you run, may be play some less cpu demanding games first?

i edited the post to say "whether my cpu can take a gpu upgrade" i'm not planning on upgrading cpu cuz I know how impossible it is. If I were to upgrade my cpu I would be throwing out this mobo and getting a better one, that would make my life easier on choosing a cpu and I could have m.2  and overclocking.

I think your GPU is fine just start saving up some money to you're to CPU later down the line imo

I am also on my gtx970, imo performance gain from gtx1660/ti isnt really impressive over 970 to make the call. so a rtx2060 makes sense to me. anything above is overpriced/ bad value. or may be wait for navi

Dont worry about cpu bottleneck and pair with a weak gpu, get best gpu you can afford. you will not be using that i5 forever.

My brother has an i5 7400 and a 970, he has a bottleneck in some games. What are the specific games in your library? It's largely title dependent.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Yeah... save up for a new mobo/CPU/RAM before you upgrade GPU. Zen 2 is coming out in July, perfect!

If he is on 1080p not really a point sidegrading to a 1660 or something like that

As of now? Mainly league of legends, a little overwatch, and a couple assassin's creed titles, but I'm looking into a couple more demanding AAA titles such as Black ops 4, Just Cause, and maybe Battlefront 2.

I am on 1080p, and I don't care crap about the 1650 or 1660...after seeing the rtx failure I'm more hesitant to try gpu's that just came out, if I upgrade, it will probably be to a gtx 1070, maybe if I can afford it, a 1080

Both your 4/4 CPU and 970 are holding you back in AAA titles, but either upgraded alone isn't going to fix the frametime in those games. You will need both. For the older games, your current system should be fine still.

Keep using your system, save up and get a new everything when Zen2/Navi launch imo.

If you can score an i7 Haswell for cheap (and I mean CHEAP, under $100) then that might be worth it to buy you some time. But it's unlikely that you will find one. After that price, it's not worth it at all.

Overwatch will saturate all 4 cores, and with only the memory bandwidth of DDR3, you won't be able to multitask at all, even a YouTube video in the background. Battlefront and black ops won't like only 4 cores either.

yup i don't have a high-end machine i knew that. Besides, I don't plan on watching youtube while playing(or streaming)

with how expensive ram is, I'm not considering upgrading ram anytime in the near future, and if I were, I would prolly stay away from ddr4, just get a single stick of 8gb ddr3, I doubt I would need more than 16gb anyways.

They're around the same price new... RAM prices are dropping like crazy, with a 8GB kit of DDR4 going for as low as $35

I'd go for a whole new platform before you upgrade GPU, if you're still playing at 1080p.

Isn't getting a new m/b (around 90-100€) with that new Intel Core i5-9400F (160€) and using the 970 you have now, and perhaps upgrade that Graphics card later on for more performance?

but, depending on what you use it for, maybe an i7 is more appropriate or consider AMD.

RAM is quite cheap right now.

I got some Ballistix and kingston (paid about 120€ for a single Kingston 2133MHz 8GB stick 2 years ago. last year (prices were dropping) i paid 80€ for 8GB of 2400MHz stick and not too long ago, i got 2kits of; 2x8GB 2400MHz Ballistix Sport LT white for 80 or 90€)

Ballistix Sport LT DDR4 - 8 GB (DIMM 288-PIN - 3000 MHz / PC4-24000 - CL16 - 1.35 V) is 45€ per stick. that's not much
