I guess it would make sense and make life easier if you meta-tagged videos and YouTube used that to search, not the title. Then it would not matter if the title was the love life of teddy bears but the subject was RAM speed as long as it was tagged RAM speed.

And to add to that why can they not do both? I see this across all the tec-tubers where if they are making money they are shills and their content sucks if they make money.  Same thing in the video game industry. If the company makes money their games suck etc.  I have seen it there for a long time having been playing since 1981, once the company becomes big they were money grubbers and their games were no longer good. Same with MMO's, they want good content, and end games but whined and moaned when charged for it. Same for single player games. God forbid they charge for DLC. What do we want great games and DLC, how do we want them, free, seems to be the hue and cry now.  No. I do not want microtransactions they promote pay to win, but more than that I want a good well made games with good content and graphics. And video games have not gone up in cost for that much in decades, they sure have not kept up with inflation, even though the cost to make them keeps going up.  All that said, it also goes for tech.

Yep I also agree that for the main channel it doesn't matter to me if the title is clickbait but for the tech quickie channel it matters because they provide the users with educational content so it makes it harder for someone to search for a topic.

I don't think people are mad that Linus is making money. I mean, he's running a business and he needs to make some dough somehow.

But the concern isn't with money. It's with content quality. Making dough and quality content that doesn't require super blatant clickbait (especially on channels aimed to be educational) are not mutually exclusive. It's not like LMG is small fry as they've grown to become one of the biggest brands not just in YouTube but in the tech community as a whole.

I don't particularly mind the clickbait on the main channel as much because it's become clear that Linus wants it to be more of an entertainment channel with some remnants of educational bits. However, a channel like Techquickie, a channel that is aimed at being educational, doesn't really require clickbait IMHO, and some of those titles actually do more harm than good.

As a long time viewer whose not a kid- the clickbait has made discovering things on both TQ and LTT a complete nightmare.

  • Want a 9900k vs 2700X review? HOW is THIS for Gamers??
  • Looking for a wireless headphones comparison? Do Beats Headphones Still SUCK?
  • Finding a Surface Studio 2 review? Microsoft is Infuriating.

Now tell me, how is someone supposed to find anything in this mess of titles? It's like Linus took everything about SEO (you know, stuff that's related and describes the content) and threw it out of the window. I understand clickbaits work well, but I'd be curious to see long-term viewership patterns for both styles of thumbnails and titles. At the risk of talking bad about the guy who quite literally got me into tech, my current education, and work- I no longer follow Linus to learn things, but to entertain myself. I honestly feel as though the channel name should update itself to reflect this- it's no longer Linus giving "Tech Tips", rather- Linus doing entertaining stuff within the medium that's not educational.

Yes- there's perhaps an argument to be made about recent videos like the Linus gaming guide, but those are so far and few between- and even when they are supposed to educate- they no longer really do that when they don't explain why you're doing a technical step/ what it's supposed to mean, and rather are a blind follow along kind of a thing. I like the new production value- I truly do- LTT stands out from the rest my heads and shoulders, but the channel still aligned itself with educating first, entertaining second.

Yeah I agree, I understand and can sympathise with why they do it, and I would rather they did it than went out of business, but it can be very annoying. At least the videos behind the titles are still really really good, unlike a lot of channels, that once they go clickbait titles the video quality just drops. Linus's videos are still excellent (hence why I still watch them). .

Our demographics are more heavily skewed towards adults than the grouping of "similar channels" YT compared us to in a recent consultation session with them. You can keep saying this, but it's not a thing, so put it out of your mind. We use the titling/thumbnail strategies we do because if we didn't we'd be taking a deep hit to our viewership. I'm not mad about them making money. They made money back in early 2017 (when they didn't have clickbait), and I liked their content back then. They're a business, they need to make money. But I don't support their more recent method of making money (through clickbait).

Anyways, that aside, since you support LMG so much, please answer my question: Why don't you admit that LMG is more concerned about their cheques than their content? Linus even openly admitted that (indirectly) in the video in which he tries to address the complaints about clickbait. For LTT (his entertainment channel), I guess clickbait is fine. But Techquickie is (supposed to be) an "informative" channel.

Take a look at this:

 F1C7535C-B32C-4E64-83D9-505522333BF1.jpeg.815614d4a213ab2b03fa2422912c33ab.jpeg

Do you actually think this is going to be an informative video? LMG is making such bad generalizations just to gain a few views.

Now take a look at this:

 50A60413-5F87-4F21-99E9-21ADE15ED833.thumb.jpeg.5d986b18b5462c2460a88cff2cfd28fa.jpeg

This is a screenshot of Techquickie's videos organized from most to least popular. These are videos that I'd actually watch. And notice something rather strange? There's no clickbait! Isn't that amazing?

LMG thinks that clickbait is going to improve their pay cheques (at least for Techquickie). But what they don't realize, unsurprisingly, is that clickbait will hurt, at least in the long run, their informative channel.

Stop throwing that statement around like it's a fact, because it's not. That's your opinion.

Go back to my post and look at the screenshot of the video called "The Marketing is A LIE." Do you consider that a "quality" video?

Do you consider any of their most recent videos "quality" content?

Along with the clickbait titles and thumbnails, I can ensure you, without even watching any of these videos, that most of their 'information' will be bs.

And ignoring ALL of that, Techquickie, LMG's informative channel, shouldn't have clickbait.

I wasn't saying that it caused a drop in quality of Linus's videos, it didn't, that's why I don't mind as much. I was saying that often when channel do start with the clickbait the actual video quality drops as well, but luckily that never happened with Linus, the video quality stayed at the high level it was at.

I would also disagree about the thumbnails not being targeted towards kids, I think the thumbnails are, as no adult cares what face someone is making on the thumbnail of a video, no adult will click on a video just because Linus is making a silly face. But as I said I also don't really mind too much as the videos are still excellent, and at the end of the day the video is the thing I actually care about, not what I have to click on to get to it.

In simple words, over time thumbnails and titles became clickbait because that was the best way to make people click and watch your video's. At least back then people clicked on it because say the thumbnail looked flashy or something, nowadays your video simply won't be displayed by Youtube if it doesn't meat said flashy thumbnails and such.
Honestly, I don't blame LMG for making clickbaity titles and thumbnails because they have to, Youtube would bury their content if they didn't. Next to that Linus has stated multiple times that he hates doing this but he has to in order for LMG to stay relevant and alive.
