Tensors for rendering???

Hi, so i am doubtfull which gpu to buy: i want a system for content creation (c4d, vray, adobe)

Sofar this is what i am pretty sure about:

amd 2950x

asrock taichi x399

corsaire vengeance lpx 3200 16gb 

samsung 970 1tb

Samsong evo 950 512 gb

 

 

1080ti are crazy expensive here in the netherlands. So i thought 2070 rtx or maybe i can squeeze a 2080 out of my paycheck...how fo either cards compare to gtx 1080???? Will there be an option to gpu render using tensors????

No tensorcores are very limited in what they can do. Get the cheapest option 1080s aren't really worth it. 1080tis are the only cards I would get and check on EVGA B-stock. They had 1080tis new for $609

If you want content creation, I highly recommend the RTX 2060 rather than the 2070/2080 because of the extreme performance per dollar uplift. Maybe even get two 2060s! In compute scenarios, 2x 2060s will outperform even a 2080 and even the 1080 Ti since you have more cores and GDDR6. Compared to the GTX 1080, they have RT and tensor cores, which can help dramatically in certain cases, not to mention the fact that you will have the GUARANTEE that they have not been mined with (as long as you get new). Also, the 20 series cards will have longer lifetime support, as 10 series will lose support in the next 2 years (they already have limited DXR support to begin with).

I should also mention, after looking at the rest of your parts, make sure you get a decent power supply. I personally recommend the EVGA 850 G3, has been working perfectly for a PC I built, and I am sure it will also do you well for your load, even under overclocked conditions, and can definetly support the extra GPU as well! Not to mention, it is quite compact, if you want a PSU that is more compact, there is the 1000W option as well, the 1000W G3 by EVGA.

If I was building a new setup today I would go with a Quadro RTX card. Use a gaming card if your output is to games.  I used my powerful 3D rig for editing but shot the output to a minimum spec computer. That kept my content lean.  

Also I had lots of crashes using gaming cards with 3DS Max and PhotoShop. Quadros and CPUs are safer for overnight jobs. 

 

If you are not doing animation to video go CPU rendering. 10 to 50 rendings for a project is best done CPU. As a 3D designer over 90% of the work I did was CPU. The 2950x is a good choice.

 

I would use 32 gbs ram minimum but 64gbs slow ram would be better. Sometimes clients gave me Autocad files that would not load with 32 so I had to go and get help from friends that had more so layers could be remover to get it loadable with 32. This was always embarrassing. 

 

A 970 EVO is not needed unless you are editing large PhotoShop files that are around a gb in size. A 2tb plus SATA would serve you better.

I rendered mainly at 4k or 8k. Only a few times a year I had to go higher.  SATA SSDs are fine for this.

Also an 970 EVO only makes sense if all your drives are that speed since it is as fast as the slowest drive if it has to read or write to it.  That is why I use one 2tb 970 EVO. If I need more space I would get another 970 EVO.

Thanks for your great advice!  I actually will be doing quite a bit of animation. Which quadro would you recommend...budget is an issue.

Please note the RTX-2060 does not support SLI short of using a hack and you won't be able to use a NV-Link bridge.

 

I run SLI'ed GTX-1080TI's in a EKWB custom loop and haven't found any issues. In fact I've been running SLI in many forms since the GTX-7900GT and even 2 x GTX-2095's for some quad-SLI goodness.There was a time about a year ago where you needed to perform some skulduggery to enable SLI as the NVidia CPL would refuse to enable it because of certain programs/services running in the background (that were difficult to shutdown) but that problem disappeared..

Thanks, but from what I understand sli is not required for productivity/rendering: the engine will utilize all available cores
