Hwy, so I was recently working on one of my dad's laptops trying to help speed it up. One thing that I noticed  was that the disk seemed to always be at 100% usage for the most part. This slows it way down. Nothing else seems to be bottlenecking it. I really can't tell what the heck is causing it to be so slow. The only program that really runs in the background.

probably indexing. turn it off by diving into the properties in the file explorer. it's at the bottom.

Do you know what speed the hard drive is?

All the 5400RPM hard drives I've had Windows 10 on will idle at 100% usage, which will slow down basically everything and be a general pain in the neck.

500 gig drive? if you really want to speed it up, grab an ssd and copy that data over. It's about a $70 upgrade, but it makes a huge difference in the usability of the device.

Total capacity is 488GB. I'm just going to assume it's a 500GB drive.

Wow, you're right. Sorry about that.

OP, try turning off indexing the drive as stated by @knightslugger, and if that's still too slow, I would look into an SSD.

It's windows update, I just updated 2 hp laptops to the latest windows as the install refused to work, hogged all the resources until it failed to install. I then cloned the hard drives and replaced them with SSDs because it is the best possible upgrade a laptop can get.

Windows is basically unusable with a mechanical HDD. My mums laptop has a 3rd gen i5 U processor and was grinding to a halt constantly, especially when Windows Update was running. I chucked a 250GB SSD in there and it's good as new, no slow down issues anymore.
