I have a perfectly working 1080 ti but I could upgrade to rtx 2080 for free. Should I do it?

Why not throw an extra and secure the cheapest RTX 2080 Ti you come across? Either ways the VRAM isn't an issue... 8gb is enough for 1440p across the board and even at 4k you're still hardly limited by your VRAM but still much more by your processing chip.

 

RTX cards have quite a couple of architectural changes that with time and proper driver development might pull ahead performance wise at some point, it also has much improved NVENC capacity if streaming ever becomes a thing for you.

 

I'd say go for it, it's a good way to keep the value of your hardware.

As title said. I know both cards perform roughly the same but the ti has more vram but the 2080 has ray Tracing and most likely more support in the future.  My 1080 ti is 2 years old now but I can replace it with a new 2080 for free. Should I do it? I heard there were issues with the 2080\ 2080 ti too so I dunno

Well that's tempting, Depends if you won't be downgrading too much the card itself, like I think I'd still rather have a GTX 1080 Ti Hall of Fame over a RTX 2080 EVGA Black.

 

But all in all it's worth considering even if the cards still perform about the same across the board.

The issues were fixed i believe, but anyway if Ray Tracing matters to you that much and you consider it worth it then sure go for it, otherwise there's no point.

The 2080 is worth more so if you ever plan on upgrading from a 1080 ti/2080 performance, I would get the 2080. Almost the same performance, not the same price.

Lol hey I remember you from the last time I posted here hehe. You are literally the only person I remembered and u posted first haha. But yeah this quite the conumdrum I'm in. If I do replace it I'll essentially get a brand new graphics card with the same performance. Just less vram and little more support from Nvidia but my 1080 ti has been doing so well and reliable that I dunno if I can let it go

Tbh I don't care for ray Tracing  I think it's a gimmick for gaming but is useful for people who work for big animation  studios like Pixar. You're right it's no point but it's basically getting a new graphics card that has the same performance and support. But like I said in the previous post my current 1080 ti is so reliable and working so well that it's a bit of a conundrum for me to decide.

Why not throw an extra and secure the cheapest RTX 2080 Ti you come across? Either ways the VRAM isn't an issue... 8gb is enough for 1440p across the board and even at 4k you're still hardly limited by your VRAM but still much more by your processing chip.

 

RTX cards have quite a couple of architectural changes that with time and proper driver development might pull ahead performance wise at some point, it also has much improved NVENC capacity if streaming ever becomes a thing for you.

 

I'd say go for it, it's a good way to keep the value of your hardware.

For the rtx 2080 ti, I really really thought about it and I'm sorta a graphic whore that wants the best of the best but I'd have to add 500-600 dollars more for about roughly 25 percent performance which I don't think its worth. When I bought the 1080ti, i only bought it because it was actually quite high in performance per dollar compared to the 1080 and 1070 at the time but 2080 ti per/dollar is just so low that I can't justify it

 

 

And yeah even now 8gb is good enough already and I only play on 1440p really. You're right that RTX cards have architectural changes with a lot of features that might be used later on to keep its edge over the 1080 ti and its a good way to keep value of my hardware.

And my reply to that would be what ch3w said. I know Nvidia graphic cards dont "degrade" in performance, they just get less money put into older graphic cards to optimize the drivers which make sense.

Even if Ray Tracing and DLSS is a joke, the raw performance of the RTX cards is undeniable and won't somehow just become undervalued. Will pricing go down? Most likely, but will it go lower than your current 1080 ti? I doubt it.

Get the new one if it is for free (and new, never used) and gives you the same performance for what you do in your computer, you dont need to use the RT thing...

It’s just a guess at this point but since it’s using old tensor cores and AMD and other game engines have demoed ray tracing without the extra hardware it’s sorta pointless. Yes it’s a different kind of ray tracing but you can barely tell the difference. Only reason why 1000 series would be worth less is NVIDIA stops supporting them
