Hey all,

For starters, my current spec is a GTX 980 paired with a 4790k.

I'm trying to decide if I should go for a whole new build, or just pop in a new graphics card.

I used to just run CS:GO on my 1440p 144hz monitor, and my current spec ran that just fine. I've gotten into APEX lately, and I'm not seeing anywhere near the numbers I saw with CS:GO. I'm hoping to atleast get above the 100fps mark on high settinngs, and it looks like either the 2080 or the 2080ti are my only options.

Given the 4790k is quite a few generations old now, I'm wondering if that would end up being a bottleneck for my frames.

So the question is: do I need to upgrade my cpu along with graphics to get the frames I want? And if so, what CPU should I upgrade to? I'd appreciate any advice!

It's probably fine, I'd recommend upgrading your gpu now and if you don't get the results you desire upgrade to a 9700k/9900k

I haven't played Apex, so I can't speak directly to the game, however the 4790k is still a solid performer. You'll get better performance with a current generation CPU, but you're going to be underwhelmed with the improvement you'll see over the cost invested in it. There's really only two reasons to move off the 4790k at the moment, from a gaming perspective anyway, those being USB-C and M.2 support (though I believe some z97 boards do support m.2)

My 4790k is paired to a 1080ti and it's doing everything I need it to still.

Eh. I'd wait for AMD to release their third gen stuff if you're going to do a whole system rebuild.

Hell, I'd even wait just to see if their new cards push down the price of NVidia's.

If you want to up the performance you could grab a GTX 1070Ti/1080 in the meantime.
