10 Year Old PC To New Build

Kardall

Hello everyone. Long time lurker, loved watching Unboxing vids, and I have been doing some research the last year or so... or three, trying to decide when to Upgrade my computer.

Current PC Specs from Speccy w/ Temps (LOL):

Operating System
    Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU
    AMD Phenom II X6 1090T    59 °C
    Thuban 45nm Technology
RAM
    8.00GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
    ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. M5A97 EVO (Socket 942)    34 °C
Graphics
    ASUS VS239 (1920x1080@60Hz)
    TOSHIBA-TV (1920x1080@59Hz)
8192MB ATI Radeon RX 470 Graphics (ASUStek Computer Inc)    53 °C
Storage
    223GB Crucial CT240BX200SSD1 (SSD)    25 °C
    232GB Seagate ST3250318AS (SATA)    30 °C
    931GB Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 (SATA)    32 °C

So the last year I have been finding that some games just have issues on launch, while other people with newer (like 3 year old machines) don't. So I have decided that it's time to put my Phenom to rest and maybe revive it as a PC for my parents who only really do email.

So as of today, I have purchased most of my parts for my new build. My build is going to eventually be put into a new desk with a rack area, so I had to buy a Rack Mount case. Seeing as i'm poor, I had to go with something that was functional and not pretty. It's in a rack so who cares. I don't have a lot of money to spend this shot, so in the future I can upgrade the case, but I just really needed a new machine.

Operating System
    Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU
    Ryzen 7 1800X (I got it for $239CAD)
RAM
    16.00GB Dual-Channel G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 3200
Motherboard
    MSI X470 GAMING PLUS AM4
Graphics
    ASUS VS239 (1920x1080@60Hz)
    TOSHIBA-TV (1920x1080@59Hz)
8192MB ATI Radeon RX 470 Graphics (ASUStek Computer Inc)
Storage
    223GB Crucial CT240BX200SSD1 (SSD)    25 °C
    232GB Seagate ST3250318AS (SATA)    30 °C
    931GB Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 (SATA)    32 °C

So that is what I have currently.

Now the problem is choosing a cooler.

I am going to actually put the PC together in April (when I get another GST Check) and at that point I will be buying the Cooler. So I am not 100% sure on which one to get.

The main issue is that the headroom is 155mm for space at the max... and I'm pretty sure it'd be touching the top of the case from what I have read. So I need to go less, maybe around a 150mm cooler. The reason is that I have gone with the Rosewill RSV-R4000 4U Chassis, so it doesn't have a whole lot of room for a cooler.

Either that or I go for a Captain Deepcool radio 240mm solution, or perhaps maybe a 360 triple fan radiator solution of some sort. I am just wondering if anyone has had any low profile solutions.

The triple radiator would fit in the cross section bracing bar, maybe with a little modding, not sure. I have seen a few people do videos on radiators mounted in this way, and also some mounted on the front panel.

Anyone have any input?

Don't go air-cooling, that amount of room in the case + a Ryzen 7 is a pretty bad idea unless you want the case fans to sound like a jet engine and/or your GPU to choke ifffff your CPU doesn't throttle.

A 120/240mm AIO cooler exhausting air from the back of the case would be the best bet.

The Cooler Master MasterLiquid Lite 120  is always a good choice for anyone not doing heavy overclocking+has a tight budget+has some space constraint issues. It cools my FX 8350 @ 4.2Ghz (it's 3.2Ghz stock) and chugs 120w+ (rated)  power like a construction worker with a beer after a hot day, yet I've never seen my core go past 65'c using the Lite 120. (HW monitor says I'm around 55-70w during gaming, 90w during stresstesting)

Sells for around $50 USD, I got mine on sale for $39.99 Canadian on Cyber Monday.

I see you said GST so I'll post a Canadian link (Hello from Sudbury, Ontario!)

https://www.amazon.ca/Cooler-Master-MasterLiquid-MasterFan-MLW-D12M-A20PW-R1/dp/B06WRRDS73/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=coolermaster+master+liquid+lite&qid=1551409520&s=gateway&sr=8-9-spell

For an extra $25 you can get a 240mm and RGB, good idea if you're doing overclocking (if that tickles your fancy)

https://www.amazon.ca/Cooler-Master-Chamber-Support-MLA-D24M-A18PC-R1/dp/B07CRGC899/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Cooler+Master+MasterLiquid+Lite&qid=1551409680&s=gateway&sr=8-1

I'd personally recommend just getting the 120mm and getting 2 high-pressure fans for it, the stock fan was kinda loud when it ramped up so I replaced it with 2 cheapo rosewill fans (1 pushing + 1 pulling), I imagine the RGB fans are just the same fan with clear plastic and RGBs glued onto the frame.

Big recommendation for Cooler Master AIOs is because they have a Canadian Facebook page you can use for support if there's literally ANYTHING wrong with it.

I noticed 3 months after I bought my AIO (was waiting to put together a build) that it came completely /-/ warped (only 2 screws would go in), Amazon said it was too late to return it so I reached out to their FB with a picture and they sent me out a new one the next day, no return of the original required :)

P.S. the Phenom x6 1090t is an AM3 CPU, AM3 and AM4+ use the same mounting hardware for their cooling solutions :)

If the MB you're chosing has holes in it like this;

Image result for am3 vs am4 mount

and not just single holes, your cooling solution for the Phenom can be moved over while you save up for a badass custom loop ?

You're saing repalcement fans for the AIO correct?

When I was considering the be quite! dark rock slim whatever it was exactly ... I was contemplating putting some high air-flow fans in the back/mid section of the case... but when I did the math ... which doesn't take a rocket scientist, the money you spend on the Noctua or similar fans would easily replace an AIO option so ... yea. I can see your point.

Also, seeing as you are in Ontario, have you heard of this company Powertop.ca?

That's where I bought the CPU which is around $100 cheaper than Amazon ... i was skeptical but ... we'll see in a week or so when it arrives at what kind of 'deal' it is.

also: Cooler Master Master Liquid LC240E

If i make it a red color, my FPS goes up by 10% correct? LOLOL

While it sounds like a gay pronz site, Powertop.ca is owned my CanadaComputers.com and uses the same distribution and logistic methods (shared warehouses etc), it's just a company refresh imo because Canada Computers has gone downhill. But yes, it's legit.

I personally only buy from Memory Express, Newegg and Amazon for my computer hardware, but that's just because it makes it easier to make returns if/when they happen, instead of searching 12 different sites that I bought all my hardware from lol.

Yup, AIO coolers just use standard 120mm case fans.
Heck, you could even use the ones already in your case if you're happy with their airflow and noise as another cost saving measure (again, I did that with the rosewill fans since I already had them), if you put 2 fans on the cooler it eliminates the need for a "high performance/low noise" fan since they're both helping eachother and only need to run at about 2/3rds the speed as just the 1, again a good cost saving measure lol.

That's good news... I even called them to inquire about it, asking why they were so much cheaper but never got back so I was a little iffy. However, now I am feeling a lot better about this. Thank you. I too normally buy from specific sellers, like newegg and memoryexpress on occaision when the prices are good, but this one popped on on pcpartpicker one week, and then was removed. It's a little odd. anyway.

That's great advice. I am going to see what happens when I get the parts.

I even went to the depths of replacing one of the 5 1/4 bays with a fan controller, so I could add a bunch of fans into the case, to control their speeds/noise to the point where my everyday use and gaming would have the lowest possible noise, but keeping it cool even if I did do a little overclocking.

At this point, I will probably just keep everything stock. The performance I am going to gain over my existing PC is going to just blow it away anyway. So in the future I guess I could do that ...

Thank you so much :)

Fan controller is almost a must nowadays, so it's great you have one! :) Especially if you're going to be syncing up the 2 fans on the radiator, you really don't want them to be running at different speeds bc they'll vibrate. Here's mine^^
Check out my signature if you're curious on any of my parts :P Damn controller costed me as much (normal price) as my case did when I got it on sale :P

Just wanted to post an update. I got my case, motherboard, ram and CPU all today ... 5 day's shipping to rural Saskatchewan. Color me impressed.

sdn4yuu.jpg

I chose not to go with the really deep version case. As I didn't think I needed it. *hindsight* If I had the deeper case it would have had the middle-rack with pre-installed 3 x 120mm fans. They could be replaced with a radiator. However, this case does not include said rack, so without maybe a mod in the future it looks like I am not going to be able to go for an AIO Watercool system.

Currently looking at a CRYORIG - M9a (link: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/Gqp323/cryorig-cpu-cooler-m9a )
or perhaps a CRYORIG - H7 (link: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/93Crxr/cryorig-cpu-cooler-h7 )

The distance from the case by calculations is < 155mm so that research online was correct. So I cannot put a Hyper 212 in it since that cooler is 164mm tall :(

I see good reviews on the H7 but both come with Thermal Paste. The M9a is 48.4 CFM and the H7 is 49 CFM so ... at this point it really comes down to what fan they have, the noise and price I guess.

The H7 is Quieter and has more throughput so the fan must be a little different on that vs. the M9a. The price is only $20 difference, so I am contemplating getting the H7 tomorrow (Wednesday).
