Windows 7 or Windows 8.1?

Hi!

I'm getting a gaming pc soon and I have never used windows before {I used to use Mac}. I am wondering which is better, windows 7 or windows 8.1 for someone who hasn't used windows before.

If it makes any difference my specs are:

GTX 780

650w PSU 80+

i7 4770k

8GB Corsair Vengeance 1866 mhz

Gigabyte Z87 D3HP

Windows 8.1 will increase the frames in BF4 but this will probably not be for long until a new update is released for Windows 7

You're not really limited by either to be honest, I'd go 8.1 because I like the faster boot times just get something like classic start if you dislike metro UI.

8.1 + StartIsBack

I'm using 8 with StartIsBack and I love it. The boot time is so much faster I can't believe it.

The start button just launches into the fullscreen start menu :) (AKA modern/metro UI)

I was an early adopter of 8.1 and the thing has had the worst game support.

Has that changed? I wanna go back to faster bootime if it has

Get Windows 8.1 without any start button, as you won't miss the start-button if you've never used one extensively.

you mean if you don't, windows 7 is instantly at the login screen on my pc...

I personally would still stay on 7 and not go for 8.1 because getting rid of the metro UI is annoying and a few of the functions annoy the hell out of me. I also dislike the fact that everything gets "ticked" when you select them.

It will depend on personal preference whether he goes with 7 or 8.1.

Both OS work fine for games and general work ( in my experience ).

I have to use my computers to access a web based Electronic Health Record software system. If you have specific tasks that you need, make sure that Windows 8 is compatible. I have to use either Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8 Pro.

I also have limited choices with browsers: Internet Explorer only. All others are incompatible (won't access the EHR properly).

If I was to make a HTPC/Steam-box id put windows 8.1 on it simply as even with a SSD the start-up speed is still a little bit faster and the tile interface is easier to navigate on controllers because of the tiles, otherwise windows 7.

Windows 8.1. It's possible to disable most of the metro stuff and it will be supported longer.

To be honest I really don't think Microsoft will drop support for "Metro" they have invested to much in it with trying to gain tablet market share for example. However if you can completely disable it from the OS they go ahead support it Microsoft make it better but in its current state it has no use/place.
