Putting an SSD into HP Pavilion Notebook

Hey y'all,

 

I want to put an SSD into my laptop to give it a speed boost and make it last a little longer. My laptop model is the HP Pavilion Notebook - 15-ab292nr.

 

I'm not worried about the installation process, as I've already taken my laptop apart and seen that it would fit in the same space as the current hard drive, but I'm worried about compatibility. I tried temporarily putting my boot SSD into the laptop, but it didn't work. I think it said something about it not being compatible or approved HP hardware or something like that. I'm not sure exactly, as this was a while ago. I have a theory that reinstalling windows with HP recovery would fix the problem, but I don't want to wipe that drive. That drive was a Inland Professional 240GB SSD.

 

Does anyone know of any compatibility issues that HP laptops have? If so, what brand of SSD would I need to buy to make it work?

I haven't heard of a case where a prebuilt computer outright refuses some hardware at the firmware level. If the drive uses SATA (or whatever interface is available), then it shouldn't matter.

 

If anything I would take this up with HP to get a straight answer. Otherwise you could try going after one of the more popular SSD brands like Samsung, Crucial, or Intel.

Usually when you put in a drive with a different computer's windows installation on it, it will cause problems, such as driver problems etc.

Im sure that wiping the drive would work. Just create a copy of that drive before hand, if you don't want to lose data.

In my experience, the best way to replace an old laptop hard drive (HDD) with an SSD is to get an external SSD enclosure that allows you to plug it into a computer via USB. Then get free cloning software (my favorite is EaseUS) that allows you to clone your entire system to the new SSD. If the capacity of your SSD is less than that of the hard drive then this can be tricky as you need to partition off the HDD so that the OS and all the files can 'fit' onto the SSD. From there the process is essentially plug and play, you clone your HDD to your SSD and then swap them, I have done this many many times wiothout a single issue, no need to re-install windows or HP drivers for your laptop.

Cool! I'm not that concerned about the time investment or losing files (all of my important files are either on my desktop or the cloud) but I might give this a try if I can't get anything else to work.

It is the best way to do it, i have done it dozens of times for friends and family.

 

EDIT: Also, then your HDD is the backup to your SDD since they are clones of one another.

While I'm here, does anyone have any experience with replacing a laptop optical drive with an SSD or HDD? Is it worth the cost of the enclosure, or would that money be better spent on a bigger SSD?

Not worth the cost, you would need to wire additional connectors and it really makes no sense, just get a bigger SSD. Depending on your region the sweet spot for $ per GB is the 500GB to 1TB range anyways so your money is better spent there.
