raid controler for freenas

Okay I understand raid I've used software raid before and not a problem but with my Plex / file server I'm going to have 8 drives to start and later on down the road have a second rackmount case with additional drives I'm looking for a raid card that will work with freenas and or unraid and allow me to connect the 8 drives internally and externally connect to a second case for additional drives is this possible is there a red card out there that I can use?

Don't. Use. Raid. With. FreeNAS.

You will significantly hurt performance. Better off to get an HBA with SFF 8087 or SFF 8088 ports, run them over to an external enclosure, then have SAS expanders there with your drives plugged in.

This thread documents the more "Hacked together" solutions for SAS enclosures, but using an HBA SAS card to a SAS expander is pretty normal and has much better support then RAID in freenas.

TL;DR, please don't use raid. Use SAS controllers to pass each individual drive through to freenas. You'll loose less data that way in a drive failure, and you'll have more control in FreeNAS.

Even on consumer grade hardware you can easily install two HBA's like a LSI SAS 9211-8i and add 16 drives to your server. With 10+TB drives available do you really need so much storage? If your current case cannot hold 16 drives I would suggest just upgrading your case instead of using a second enclosure...

Just consolidate it into one case. 

All of the *affordable* 16-24 bay hotswap chassis have an SAS2 backplane, so just get an LSI 9211-8i (or similar based on the same chip) and use some SFF8087 cables to connect to the backplane. 

 

If you get a case without a backplane then use SFF8087 to SATA breakout cables. 

If you require more than 16 drives, then get another HBA or get a SAS2 expander like the Intel res2sv240.
