Optical drives on an usb?

Vod

Hello!

So I'm building a new pc, and my brother really wants an optical drive, but I have no idea how to connect one, so while I was searching on ebay for Optical drives I saw an optical drive with an usb cable next to it.

That cought my eye and I clicked on it, and it looks like you can just plug it in an usb and it will work like an normal optical drive.

I don't know if this is even real, I'm seeing a lot of them, but I don't know if they work on desktops.
(Link, sorry that it's on German)

It claims to be an portable laptop external dvd driver.

Yes, USB powered Optical drives exist. Note that they are generally slower (8x speed) compared to the possible maximum (32-64x). Not saying it won't work fine for watching DVDs but don't expect extremely fast file copies. For something faster, look for an external drive powered by a outlet.

yes, it will work. A regular 3.5in optical drive connects the same way as a hdd.

Internal ODDs (Optical Disc Drives) are easy to hook up. They hook up exactly like any SATA HDD or SSD. You just need a 5.25" bay to put them in and 3x5mm screws to secure them (the screws usually come with the ODD).
