Rookie Overclocker Seeking a Safe Overclock

Hey there LTT Community! As the title of this post says I am a complete rookie when it comes to overclocking. Haven't the slightest idea what Voltages and setting to set up for it. I was wondering if one of you lovely folks could point me in the right direction. I have an Intel i7-8700k and it is liquid cooled - at least I thought that far ahead haha. It is socketed into an MSI Z390 A Pro Motherboard. The BIOS seems relatively easy to navigate. I was wondering what settings I should change to SAFELY overclock this CPU.

Just a small town Canadian Twitch Streamer with big ambitions.

I would just up the multiplier step by step with OCCT tests after every step. When you get a BSOD or the system locks up, go back one step on the multiplier and try again. If it works fine again, you gotta up the voltage a notch to go higher on the multiplier.

The first thing to do is not in the BIOS, but in Windows. Get Prime95, HWinfo ready and try use them. Prime95 is for stress testing the CPU, HWinfo is used for voltage and temperature monitoring during stress test.

Never let CPU voltage (not VID) go past 1.3v (because small rad AIOs don't cool that well) and temperatures below 80C (the CPU can take up to 95C just fine, but I don't like pushing high for a daily system). If HWinfo managed to get readings on VRM or MOS temperature, make sure that doesnt go past 100C

Turbo boost is honestly the safest way to overclock. Just leave the board to do it automatically.

oof

anyway 1.3V is already probably reaching the 90s and whatever passes a few hours of IBT is fine generally.

slam the multiplier to 45 or so and start at 1.2V, run IBT for 10min, if it crashed increase the voltage a little, if it passed increase multiplier by 1. keep an eye on temps to make sure it dosnt go over 90 or so and its not throttling down. if you cant get 45 multiplier on 1.3V then try 44 and repeat everything.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Depends on the MOBO. I had my turbo on by default and it would run my system up to 100c. I just manually overclocked and i cant get anywhere near that. i max out at 78c
