As far as I know, heaps of problems with SteamOS for users right now. I haven't seen a single screenshot or video regarding what it looks like either. I know nothing about the benefits of it over standard Linux or even Windows. Like @TheDoubleYGamer asked, I would be more wary about OS compatibility than anything. $80-110 for Windows doesn't sound too bad if it removes the chances of not being able to do anything on your computer..

I suggest waiting until SteamOS is more developed, or doing some additional research on it. I can't really help you because I don't think it's worth trying to find info on right now and won't search for it. There's also the problem of not seeing anyone say anything about it at all, so..

Steam OS is still quite in the beta stages, meaning you may have hardware driver issues. Have you had previous experience with Linux or familiar with command line?

I would suggest posting your systems specs via PC part picker to help find RRP $149,99 to use towards windows, the community members are very good at helping with this sort of thing.

I think once steam os gets more support then it will be great but as of now its not very good, if you could have a dual boot to windows or steam then that would be nice.

SteamOS is specifically designed for the living room, hence why it boots directly to the big picture mode, my suggestion is for a desktop install a desktop Linux like Ubuntu of which you can install regular desktop Steam on there and even go into big picture mode if you want, but the main experience will be a desktop which is what you want.

Functionality between both is identical, but Ubuntu is specifically designed for the desktop.

Ubuntu isn't the only choice Mint is based of ubuntu with a different more windows like esque.

There are a plethora of Linux alternatives, all of which are currently more reliable than SteamOS. At least until SteamOS is officially released.

ElementaryOS and Linux Mint are excellent.

A more bleeding edge option would be Archbang, an easier version of Arch. Could also look into Crunchbang, based on Debian.

Would you recommend me use a trial version of win8 until I buy a legit copy, also if I use the trial can I active the key on it or do I have to reinstall.  Thanks All

If you use the enterprise evaluation version then I think you will need to reinstall. I don't know if you can run a standard version for say 30 days before you activate like you can with Windows 7, if you can then as long as you use the same version you buy then you wouldn't have to reinstall.

I was going to suggest about trying something like Ubuntu while you save up for Windows then if you decide you don't like it buy Windows but if you do like it you have x money in your pocket.

Yeah you can definitely dual boot, install Windows first then install Ubuntu and select the 'keep Windows and install Ubuntu alongside' (or words to that effect), and it will do the rest.

Trying out this kind of stuff and which drivers work best are best to do before you activate Windows for a more permanent install because if you break anything you just reinstall and start anew, I always do that and make notes on what works best for a few days before I clean install and activate Windows, that way you start off with the cleanest install possible.
