ubuntu - only detected an i686 CPU Problem

Hello!
I'm trying to put ubuntu 64-bit for a course in college into my old laptop, but it's shows me:

"This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot – please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU".

The laptop is a SONY vaio PCG-4V1M. I found solutions online only for virtual machines and options that I can't find in my bios.
If you can help, I would be great.
thank you!

The Atom CPU is a 32-bit CPU, not a 64-bit one. 32-bit CPUs are no longer supported by Ubuntu, you'll have to download Ubuntu 16.04 for it -- http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/ubuntu-16.04.5-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

You are going to have to use 32-bit Ubuntu. Your CPU does not support 64-bit. I am not sure if the latest version of Ubuntu (18.04) supports 32-bit, but I'm sure that version 16.04 does. I would use Lubuntu 16.04 LTS on it to be honest.

Thank you both. It worked :) ! But now is has a graphical error where the computer goes in and out of sleep mode non-stop.

I found that it's an Nvidia error. I'm working on it.

Cheers everyone!

You may try Mint which has 32bit support
