Do you know the answer to this math problem?

Isn't A and B basically just the X and Y of the point where both formulas encounter each other? As in you have to compare them :

A) Would be 9.45 seconds
B) Would be 462 meters.
C) Is essentially what I've written

Am I missing something here? Even DESMOS gives me the same result when entering both formulas.

Yeah seems right I guess. Just move the t around. Quite simple, I thought it was going to get into more advanced, gravity and time this that and the other. Perhaps trig and angles.

 

You have to square root the t at the end.

-4.9t^2+900 = -4t  +500

-4.9t^2 = 4t + 500 - 900

-4.9t^2 = 4t - 400
-4.9t^2 / 4t = -400

-4.9t^2 / 4t = -400 x 4

-4.9t^2 / 4t = -3600 

t^2/4t = -3600 / -4.9

t^2/4t = 734.69

t^2/t = 734.69 x 4

t^2/t = 2938.78

t = 2938.78 probably seconds, could be minutes.

t is just an unknown. It represent the number of seconds after the crate was dropped in this particular case.
It can be replaced by literally any other letters as long as you remember what it's used for, I used x for it because x is easier to work with than t, especially on paper where t could be mistaken for +.
Usually, we use a graph with an x and y axis, x representing the time(seconds, days, years) and y as the number of something (like meters). But it's not absolutely limited to that and can be anything else. This is high school math.
It could technically be physic, but this sort of question is math since they don't require you to calculate things like the force/speed at which the crate is falling

And t was 9.45 seconds, the answer to A). (or 9.4524570637389136247310113144392... seconds, if you want to more a bit more precise)

You don't lose points for using a different unknown variable in your calculations than the one in the problem itself, as long as you identify it somewhere with something like x = time in seconds(t)  ///  y = height in meters(h).
With problems like these, it's nice to have graph papers so you can create a visual interpretation of the formulas you're working with, of which students should be allowed to use during their exams as well, if their school isn't complete garbage anyway. (Heck, these days, the high schools here allow students to have an actual "cheat sheet" during their math exams, for them to write various formulas and other crap they may have forgotten on it... ridiculous)
