4790k upgrade to ???

I hate saying this because I think it's normally terrible advice, but there might be the possibility of something big coming from AMD, Intel, or both.  If you can get an 8700K, motherboard and RAM at a good price and you don't feel like waiting I'd get them, but there is no telling what's coming.  It could be nothing exciting or it could be the start of a new CPU performance race where the consumer wins.

I'll add a bit to that...

Wait for tomorrow, AMD keynote at CES

Good afternoon,

Recently bought a full rig for £500 it included a 4790k and a 1080 FE.

Watched a video on YouTube comparing the 4790k and a 8700k both stock and both OC. The 8700k fps increase was easily 30-50% on most AAA games.

My questions is, would it be worth it to upgrade to the 8700k now or is anything else coming out this year that I should wait for? Also have zero clue about AMD so any input there is appreciated.

I know I will have to buy a new mobo cpu and ram but after I sell the 4790k 32gb ddr3 and mobo thats going to be £400-500ish towards the upgrade, would also like micro/ mini atx mobo for a super compact rig any suggestions would be welcome!

Thanks

Thanks for the reply Bobby, I heard there might be something coming out this year but not 100% if it will be any good, or if it will reduce the prices of used parts etc.

Ill see if any one else has some more advice before taking any big decisions!

Make sure you quote people so they can see that you responded. You can @ them too, but quoting is more specific in a notification.

AMD is possibly announcing their new Zen 2 lineup of 3000 series ryzen CPU's, so make sure by the end of the day tomorrow you look into it or come back here to the forums to learn about it. Everyone is very excited for it.

I'm excited for it, but also realistic... Better hope that it isn't like fx...

Why are you bothering about some tests on YT and not real world performance?

Run the benchmarks yourself, play some games and see if you get the performance you want. Is the games playable at the resolution and the graphic-mode you desire or do you get stuttering that makes the game unplayable or can you dial back on the 16X MSAA and still be happy?

If you got a 4790K, 32 GB RAM and a 1080 FE for £500 you have mad a good deal, well worth it's money.  Keeping the card and resell the other won't give you £4-500 back to reinvest, maybe half or around £300 as best. If you don't get extremely lucky.

Maybe peak FPS at 1080p on some specific games. The 4790k is still a very capable processor that performs little worse than a 7th gen i7. An 8th gen i7 will be a bit better and offer 6c/12t but you'd need to switch the whole platform again. Since Intel still has production issues and stocks are low, prices for new top of the line Intel cpus are insane. It's about 370GBP and up. Add another 120-150 for a solid mainboard and another 150 for only 16GB of memory. You get the picture I suppose? You'll have to invest like 650-700GBP at least to switch platform again. An 4790k can be sold for like 200-250, the 32GB of memory are probably worth another 120, if the mainboard isn't a high end smaller form factor board it's not worth much anymore. I'd rather invest in a Ryzen setup for less money and end up with more cores. Though you have to accept the fact that a Ryzen 2700 even running at 4.2 on all cores won't outperform a 4790k by much in some games.

Just ignore the max fps in any benchmark. Look at average and the 0.1% fps. You want your frametimes stable. That's way more important than an extra 30 fps once you're already around 100 or even higher. If you want top performance you'll have to invest in a 9900k and drop even more money. If you're playing at 1440p or even 4k, ignore those benchmarks. I'm pretty sure they were made at 1080p.

Use the quote function when answering! Mark people directly if you want an answer from them!

Thanks for the reply, I'm going to stick with the trusty 4790k for now, had another look at the fps comparison and it was in 1080, had another look at 1440p and there really wasn't much in it!

For a 4th gen cpu it's an absolute beast!
