Does anyone else "recycle" stuff they find at the local rubbish dump.

Personally, I have had about a dozen working systems taken from the dump, cleaned up and resold.

I have also had screens, hard drives and ram that I can make use of for free.

Would you feel it was below you to do this.

Nothing to see here - move along.

Here in vancouver we have this thing called free geek where I used to volunteer where we would take apart old broken rigs and salvage all the working hardware and then re cycle the broken stuff and then use all the good stuff to re build new systems and sell them in a thrift shop that was upstairs. But anyways, I think it's fine to go to the dump and salvage stuff.

I don't see why it would be below us.

Personally, I have never used any discarded electronics, but I have reused some discarded lumber and a few barrels from the dumpster. If they don't see a use for it and I do have a use for it, I will reuse it. Nothing beats free.

We have landfills where I live. It smells bad and I ain't about dat wading through garbage juice dilemma

I don't know where/if we have an electronic recycling facility, but a lot of stuff probably ends up in the junk hole.

No scavenging from the dump here, but I wouldn't do it anyway. Not because it's "below" me, but I just have no desire to do it. The stench is also terrible.

The best thing I can find at my local rubbish dump is an unused adult diaper.

I once worked for a electronics recycle company here in Washington that is part of a 'e-cycle' plan where it's free to recycle computers, tv's, etc. I would often get working Win7 machines, screens and misc older components that were still usable. Even had a i7 machine dropped off because it had a bad ram stick.

I live in the lower mainland and I found out about Free Geek a month ago. I thought I might visit them soon and volunteer over there.

What can you tell me about them? Was it a good experience?

It is truly amazing the amount of people who dump their kit because they don't know what is wrong with it or that it is just "out of date".  Power to us my friend.

Nothing to see here - move along.

One of my other brothers drove the recycling truck that picks it up from residential houses for the city. He would find computers, tvs, jewelry, tons of misc crap that were all perfectly fine.

You mean like pick up old Aluminum and Copper heat sinks and other recyclable parts and take them to the recycling center for hard cold cash, no who would ever do that :P

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

You aren't allowed to remove things from the electronic waste section at my local dump.

I really wish you could though, some pretty decent stuff gets put in there, it pains me to look inside.

The guy who runs our council dump is really laid back but when he is away we have Hitler cover for him and he lowers all the barriers and checks everything.

Nothing to see here - move along.

I used to do it for about half a year, until I realized that in a small and a poor village where I live, only old and unusable tech can be found. Well, I once found a functional old phone, but the screen was broken. Not worth the money to repair it. I also happened to find 25 DVI-D cables in their original packages... Still have like 17 of them (they work).

I would continue doing that, but I would only be able to build old systems (Pentium 2 - 3 era) that no-one wants here. I couldn't even sell kind of a system like that for even few cents here.

I'd go see if things have changed over almost 2 years, but it's really cold outside. Plus there's a guy that goes there every time when the garbage truck arrives. He has made hundreds of euros by doing that over a few years and built himself a gaming PC out of that money. I gotta give props to him, though, as he helped me getting more into PCs when I was just a newcomer.

Oh and speaking of recycling centers... The nearest one is about 50 km away (the nearest town). This village has only 2 scrapyards that want money if you bring large amounts of junk. One of them is closed from public and the other one has lots of broken ionizing fire alarms (some are cracked open). Could be a bit hazardous to go there anymore...

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.
