The Ugliest Little Power Button That Could

Howdy all,

So - I had a customer bring in an Acer Aspire desktop with a broken power button. I unfortunately did not have a switch on hand that would work with the stock look, and the customer needed it same-day. In any case - ten minutes of scrap-heap searching and about 2 minutes of soldering later this Frankenstein looking thing was born.

But hey, it's more responsive and tactile than the stock Acer switch, so who cares?

As a side note - the customer said, "I don't care what it looks like, I need it cheap and I need it now", and they're very happy with the results! Hah.

Would I call this a case mod? Yes. Would I call it pretty? Hell no.

lol, that's pretty good, considering the request he made. ^^

Are you sure you couldn't have put it beneath the plastic? It would look better ;)

Unfortunately, that would have taken a lot longer than the customer wanted to wait. As it was, they were breathing down my neck to get it done as fast as possible.

The new switch is about 20x as large as the old switch (which is a small button on a board). In order to get the new switch under, I would have had to suspend it underneath the case and cut some metal.

I'm sure with some more time I would have been able to slap it all together and make it look stock, but I was not given the luxury of time  :(

Hah, it's the ugliest mod ever - but it worked for them. I felt that I needed to showcase my Frankenstein creation.

The customer threw two $20s my way and left as soon as I was finished.

... And to think all I wanted was $10! Hah.

In any case, does anyone else have terrible case mods as such? I'd love to see them. Hah.

Yikes! Why not just run the new power button through one of the 3.5" slots? You could probably squeeze the wire through (it's pretty thin).

The customer wanted the power button fixed quickly. I couldn't put it through the slot because the PC is face down at most times (don't ask, I know their crazy setup).

There's plenty I would have loved to do, but with ~15 minutes of time there's not much that you can do - hah.

@TheNinjaNextDor - I seriously hope so! The computer is in such a state of decay that I didn't even want to do this ghetto fix as is. But you know, some people really keep tech for a long time, and this guy's one of those cases. I'd say he'll be keeping this until it's literally not able to be repaired any more...

You're just trying to make it feel better. Don't worry - it doesn't have feelings  :D

If anything, it works. I'm thinking I'll have to piece together an entire Frankenstein computer fairly soon. It was kind of fun making the ugliest looking thing possible!

I guess I'll have to post up some images of real case mods that I've done - have to redeem myself from this monstrosity somehow!
