you can delete it with the disk cleanup tool, it's probably there because you updated windows so it saves a copy just in case something goes wrong with the update

I was browsing my files, see what I can delete to free space on the OS drive when I came across a folder called "windows.old". Why is this file here? My machine had a fresh copy of win 10 installed through the media creation tool. What's its function, and is it safe to delete it without any ill effects on my computer.

Also should be noted it deletes itself after 30days from the major update.
