Is a i7 actually needed for gaming?

I'm an AyyMD fanboy, but I'd still say that Intel has better "pure gaming" performance. If that's literally all you do, I'd go with Intel, but I'd suggest OP goes with Ryzen because he doesn't have a huge budget.

An i7 3770 should still be adequate for a GTX 1050 Ti in every sense, make sure what's slowing you down isn't an unhealthy OS, Bloatware and such.

I already upgraded my GPU and as i'm not gaming at 4K i feel no need to go any higher than my 1050 Ti

It's more things with the mobo that are starting to go wrong like USB ports suddenly deciding they don't want to recognise what's plugged into them (which is solved by simply restarting) and to buy a replacement Mobo for a 3rd gen intel processor will be quite hard to find at least in the UK where the second hand market isn't very strong generally

I still think you have software issues and I'd just try reinstalling your OS before spending money, but regardless if you do want to upgrade at least wait to do it by the end of the month as we'll know for sure what is AMD bringing with Ryzen 2 and release dates.

 

Those are looking to be amazing value products, and you'll probably only need the entry Ryzen 5 to not worry about CPU again in a good time.
