Hey, guys, my GF wants to dye her hair purple but doesn't want to bleach it. she has brown hair and wants a dark purple I was thinking of using punky violet and punky plum mixed to do this dyeing it once with plum then again with the two mixed. I also had someone recommend dyeing it a lighter color and then dyeing it pink. What's the best way to do this? Thanks for any help! If she wants a multi toned dye job like that, go to a professional salon and pay them to so it. Unless you know exactly what you're doing, you're never going to be able to get her hair looking like that picture. Especially not when you're asking for help on a tech forum...

I would recommend getting some temporary hair dye first just to see how it looks with her hair.

My wife has brown hair, and she needs to bleach it before dyeing it. The color simply comes out all wrong if she doesn't.

You could also ask a professional. There might be a solution that doesn't require bleaching.

Most DIY of the shelf permanent colors already contain bleaching component and usually have examples of how they end up on bright, brown and black hair (example result). If she has brown hair and wants dark purple, she'll get a dark purple when applying a brighter purple. This means hair will generally be dark, but under strong light, like sun or strong artificial light, it'll have a strong purple shine. Result may be slightly more intense on longer hair than on very short. If she wants a bright purple, you need to purposely bleach the hair first and use purple pigment color (these are often not permanent and they come without bleaching components). This will end up being strong purple at almost any light and she'll have to re-apply it more often as they wash off slowly. There are also permanent versions, but I'm not sure since I've been out of the loop for a bit.
