Buy i5 8400 or wait for 9400?

Hello. I was hoping to get advice on when the 9400 would be releasing or if I am better off just buying the 8400. With $200 to spend and a motherboard already bought, what can you recommend?

Just get the 8400. The point of 9th gen (aprt from core count) is being soldered, which you dont benefit from on a locked CPU.

Considering the 8600k and 9600k are the same processor and cost the same there's not really a belief it matters, "9th gen" was more of a marketing stun this time than actual thing, just go look this "architecture name" it's Coffee Lake just as much ;x

If you'll concern about clock speeds, you can either just go ryzen 5 2600 and oc it and have on pair performance with a better upgrade path or wait longer for I don't know the i7 8700 already? as it's as good as it gets locked wise.

I'm stuck on an EVGA Z370 FTW motherboard though, I can't buy ryzen. Does anyone know when (a few months? next decade?) the i5 9400 would be released? All i'm really concerned about is buying the 8400 and the very next day the 9400 is announced.

The price will be more than 5% extra for sure. In fact the 9400 coild be in big trouble with 8600k prices lowering day by day.

Mate 9th gen 8th gen this is really meaningless, it's really the same stuff rebranded, much like cars are rebranded but stay the same just different colors and what not.

 

If you want to make full usage of a z370 you need an i7 even the locked one is good if you BCLK or at very least grab the 8600K or 9600K or else there's just no value in the build.

Thanks. I've decided i'm just going to buy it. I was wanting to upgrade from an i5 4570 which is equivalent to an i5 7400. With that in mind I wanted every bit of performance increase as the performance would be at best from 20-30% better.

I fully realize that but there is a hard cap on $200. an i7 is well beyond $300. The unlocked i5 8600k and 9600k are extremely expensive with the cpu cooler and paste/pad topping $280. I can always down the road decide to sell the i5 8400 for an 8600k with a bit of money. I also got the motherboard on sale at $120.

Then don't stress it out the i5 8400 already is comparable to an i7 7700K performance wise, you are indeed making an upgrade.
