Possible for a cpu to be alive after a motherboard death?

So around august this year, my hp elitedesk 800 g2 died on me. I made a topic about it as well. Something had happened to the motherboard and it was fried. There were no visual signs of shorts when I checked. The pc was overkill for me with an i7 6700 non k and 16gb of ddr4. I got the pc for free from my grandpas collage. I was curious how possible the cpu is still alive. The 50pgb sshd that came with it still works, as I'm using it. The reason I say the mobo is dead is because I had this repair shop diagnose it. They didn't have any six gen motherboards to test it with as well. I ordered a refurbished Ms from newegg to see if the cpu is alive or dead. Just wanting to see what my chances would be.

When my motherboard died the CPU died too.

NCIX diagnosed both parts dead.

Intel sent me a new CPU.

It depends greatly on how it died. Hope remains.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

My personal experience is that a processor can survive almost anything thanks to the built-in protection present in motherboards.  But there's still a chance it can be killed along with the motherboard.

I agree.  Your mobo getting shot doesn't mean the CPU frys and what not.
