I saw this this other day. If you can follow the math the reasoning is interesting. Your title would be more amusing if you could make it into a proper summation though.

Because maths breaks at infinity.

Also, they used an average of 2 possible answers to solve it, which doesn't seem right. When you solve a parabolic quadratic equation, you get 2 answers, this is slightly different, but you get either 1 or 0, and not 1/2, so if anything there should be 2 answers to 1+2+3... one using 1 and one using 0.

Yep, infinity and maths dont go togheter well. So its expected to see stupid results. And numberphiles allready showed this in their infinity video.

But to see the equation of infinity in a book,... thats another level of stupidity.

Not really.1-1+1-1+...=1/2

Explaination

S=1-1+1-1+1-1...1-S=1-(1-1+1-1...)1-S=1-1+1-1+1-1....1-S=S2S=1S=1/2

Its not like you are braking fundamental laws of maths :)

What laws?There's no laws!

I'm not calculating with infinity because it's a concept,not a number.I'm just calculating with an indefinitely long sum.

It is a sum because I can calculate it.

Math's simply fucked up when you do magic with it.

Thats the precisely what you CANNOT do :)

Math is fine, physics on the other hand... you could say there is magic mixed in it yes. And astronomy.

But Physics actually uses a specific value,not an abstract concept,so...the calculation was right.
