How much RAM do you really need?

Right now windows 8 been being a jerk and freezing cause apparently using 6 out of 8 Gb means running low on memory. But 8GB is fine

It depends on the programs you use daily. 6 - 12GB for general 3D gaming and video editing and 16GB and up for heavy usage. My base amount is 16GB as i find it is a safe number for what i do now and for future stuff i might get into.

My uncle which is game dev showed me some of his three models, he makes environments for games. it was using 40gb.

No HDD anymore just run off of that, faster then any ssd lol, if you pc crashes though then everything is gone lol

Heavily dependent on what kind of programs you run. Someone running Vegas Pro editing 4K video will utilize 64GB of RAM with no problem.
On my laptop, I use 6GB of RAM with ease, running firefox (~100 tabs), Matlab, Netbeans, a VM running a webserver, skype, teamspeak, Sublime Text.
If no-one ever used more than 8GB, there wouldn't be a market for motherboards that can run 64GB of RAM (or even more)

backup to a nass or hdd's/ssd's in a redundant raid but it would take ages to boot and shutdown

I do specialized rips of music to 24-Bit FLAC from Vinyl etc.

 

Never once gone passed 6GB of ram.

I've only come close to my 8 GB of ram being used because I had about 80 tabs open in firefox and probably 30 of them were youtube videos. The really sad thing is that I was actually using all of the tabs.
