Well, today I was playing BF3 online & all the sudden I noticed stuttering in game. I thought it was because of server. I quit the game & when I opened my task manager I saw my RAM was almost full, when I went to processes tab I didn't see anything that would consume so much RAM. After that I decided to screenshot it & opened in photoshop & when I closed it, RAM went down normal. It seems like RAM leaked somewhere, but how is it possible?

How to do that? Why Windows didn't do it automatically?

I'm sorry, what? You do not need 12GB of  pagefile or any such nonsense. I've been running 1GB of page file for 2 years and have never had any problems with any games. The old "rule" of 1.5GB pagefile per gig of ram is back from the dark ages of computers having 1-2GB of RAM maximum. There is no reason for that much RAM utilization as you're showing, it is most likely due to a memory leak in some program. A reboot should fix the problem.

BF3 does not memory leak, and if Windows is recommending 12GB to me, that is what i should do, mine was at 8GB BTW.

Windows recommends a ton to be "safe". Having extra pagefile won't hurt anything, per se, but if it's on an SSD that' x GB you can no longer use. And it's totally unnecessary if you have 8+ GB of RAM. Anywhere between 1-2GB of pagefile should be absolutely fine.

It was probably a bug. Refer below for why it's fine to have a small pagefile.

For reference, here is a quote from a very popular Windows 7 installation guide (which I personally followed):

Turn Off or Shrink Page file: Applies to SSDs/HDDs

If you shrink your page file most people recommend 512MB or 1024MB, the minimum for a dump file to be created is 400MB. I suggest that if you have 4GB of RAM or less or do heavy multitasking do not disable the page file just shrink it to a reasonable size because the rule of having page file equal to or set to 1.5x the amount of your RAM is outdated. Several programs use page file when enabled like VMWare, some games, graphics software, MS office, etc. Windows does use the page file if present and will only use it when it is efficient to do so. Page file is also read at boot to speed things up. Do not put the page file on a RAM disk, it is much better to have it on the SSD or HDD. (Why to have the page file on an SSD) (Why to not have page file on a RAM disk) (The Windows 7 Pagefile And Running Without One)

  1. Open the Start Menu
  2. Right click Computer
  3. Click Properties
  4. Click Advanced System Settings (it's on the left side)
  5. Under performance click Settings
  6. Go to the Advanced tab
  7. Under Virtual memory click Change
  8. Uncheck the "Automatically manage paging file" box at the top
  9. Select the C: drive
  10. Click "No paging file" or set the min and max
  11. Click "Set"
  12. Choose Yes for the dialog box
  13. Click OK
  14. Click OK

Larger pagefile keeps memory in the right place, instead of filled to the brim, it can also help CPU processing as the CPU has cached memory instead of a constant flow of resources.

I think you're missing the point. Why do you need this all to only take up 2GB of RAM if you have way more available? You're essentially trading hard drive space for RAM utilization when you increase the page file. On an HDD that is fine, but most SSDs are very small and space is tight. My suggestion lets you use the most amount of space on the SSD that you can. If you really need TONS of RAM available, sure, make your page file big. Most gamers do not need that, however, and would benefit from the increased SSD space.

RAID array with 2TB of space, i also encode and video edit.

I stream to Twitch.TV too, and stay under 5GB of usage in any given task.

If that works for you, great. This guy is not streaming to twitch while gaming, while scanning for viruses, while having 20 tabs, open etc. etc. He had a huge memory leak in BF4 and I'm reassuring him that pagefile size isn't the problem.

When I increased my page file it took 8gb of my SSD which is almost close to getting red, so I set it to auto again. I'm very close getting my SSD & HDD to full so even some extra free space is necessary for me. I think it was bug. When I googled "memory leak battlefield" I found 2 cases where people said they had memory leak in Battlefield 4 (however mine is Battlefield 3) & developers fixed that bug with update. So maybe it's in Battlefield 3 too, just happens very rare...
