Add 1x8gb or 2x4gb to a system with 2x4gb of ram already?

I'm running two 4gb DIMMs on an ASUS B450 PLUS motherboard, I want to upgrade to 16gb.

Do I buy one 8gb stick leaving room for another in future or buy two more 4gb sticks to run in quad channel? 

The DIMMs will be identical to the existing DDR4 HyperX 2400MHz sticks, the only thing that will change would be the size if i go with 1x8gb.

im pretty sure some mobos dont support it
