What is the difference between these SSD?

KWhat is the difference between a SSD that you screw into a MB compared to a SATA SSD?

Nothing except the form factor, right into the mobo is called M.2, and its just simpler/no cords. Unless its NVME, but regular data loads don't gain much from it. Otherwise they're the same technology.

m.2 sata isn't any different, exept the formfactor.

NVME is faster, but not visible for most workloads. That's why I personally like sata more

The 970 evo is a much faster pcie drive. that costs a good amout more, what system are you putting this in?

Your probably won't notice the speed difference between the drives, but the 970 evo can be much faster, its up to you if you want to spend more money. I can show more benchmark numbers, but for a gmaing pc, id get the cheaper 860  evo

that's a good pc. I would get the sata, put some money into the mobo to go to the gigabyte master. you can get that exact psu for 20 bucks less, why that wd?

well, I have that exact model. It's glorious. But I paid 120 bucks for it...

Would recommend the 860 if you're not going to do heavy video editing, heavy cad or using it as a scratch disk. we're talking about a second load time difference here

Also about my MB and PSU, will they be good? You recommended the master which is out of my budget unfortunately. What’s the difference, and how’s the psu?

M.2 connector has TWO ways the SSD can use to transfer data : using pci-e lanes (nvme) or using SATA

 

So if you get a budget m.2 SSD that uses only SATA to transfer data, the SSD will be as fast as any regular SSD.

If you get a higher end m.2 SSD that can use pci-e lanes (nvme) then you can have up to 4 GB/s transfer speeds (depending on ssd controller used and motherboard)

 

There are motherboards which have m.2 connectors which only have the SATA part connected, so if you buy a m.2 SSD that's only nvme (pci-e) then it would simply not work in your SATA only m.2 connector.

It's best to check the motherboard manual or the specifications that will tell you if the M.2 connector has pci-e lanes connected to it, or it's just SATA m.2 connector.
