I'm looking to buy one of these CPUs for an upgrade from my current rig, and I'm unsure whether to go for the 4790K or the 4930K. I will be gaming mainly, but as well as possibly streaming these games as well as doing my University computer science work on it too.

Thanks.

EDIT: I am currently on an FX 8350.

Those are two pretty different cpus, the 4930k is ivy bridge-e while the 4790k is haswell. Haswell has about 10% better ipc compared to the ivy bridge while the 4930k has 6 cores. I'd say if you have the money, the ryzen 5 2600 is a much better choice for the superior ipc and extra cores.

Yea the only thing stopping me from a newer CPU is the cost of DDR4 RAM, but I already own 16GB of DDR3 RAM.

id probably go for the I7 4790K because it should be better in games

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Decent kits of DDR4 have been plummeting for a while now, so I'd say that selling your 16gb of DDR3 for $60-70 would be a better choice since you can get a kit of DDR4 3000 for $100.

Thanks.

Remember that you'd get a new 6 Core CPU for like 150€ or so.

So you have to have at least a decent Motherboard (higher end Z87 or 97) and a decent Amount of Memory (=8-16GiB)

I have an ASUS-Z87-A motherboard. But I'm unsure whether to sell this and grab a 4930k and a Z97. I friend said he would give me a 4930k and a ASUS Rampage IV for £220

The deal from your friend seems nice, so I'd ditch the Z87-A as its a rather low end Z87 anyway.

The 220 Pound look OK, because the Motherboard alone is worth it.

Remember: The Heatsinks/Coolers mounting for the CPU and other stuff...

But its rather easy as an i7-4790 would be only a little bit cheaper than the X79 System...
