How Would I Replicate This VCR Effect?

Hi so I recently watched a new K-pop video by one of my favorite groups and they're known for doing 80's-style music, so seeing this VCR-like effect in the music video was pretty cool and I'm curious as to how I would do it on my own pictures.

I don't own Photoshop or anything so I imagine this would be quite difficult for me to do, but at least finding out how to do the effect I would more than thankful for! :)

Just if anybody wants to know, the group is EXID 이엑스아이디 and the song is I Love You! My favorite is Jeonghwa, the one in the middle with the short hair in the last picture.

Perhaps I’m missing something here, but it looks like there are 2 main effects:

1. The OSD (on screen display for the uninitiated) having “play” etc show on the video. That’s easy. Create some graphics for each mode you want to use (“play”, “stop”, “ff”, “rw” etc).

2. Low colour saturation “VHS” style colour correcting. This should be doable in any standard professional grade video editing software. No idea how to do it, but I’m 99.9% certain there are tutorials for this exact thing.

Ah, interesting. The OSD seems simple to replicate in theory, and I can definitely find out how to do the VHS-style color correction. I feel like there is also some chromatic aberration going on as well but I can't say for sure.

The best way to replicate VHS effects is by recording that video onto a VHS tape.

There is actually 10 years of dust on my VHS sitting in the garage. Its measured in centimetres, not mm of dust lol. I don't think you can buy VHS tapes anywhere in my country lol.

As for OP I'd look into editing it with premiere. Lots of settings to fiddle with such as the saturation of the colour in the video, can work great. Add a little grain too and can add lines and dots for old video with AfterEffects.  As for the play and pause etc, making graphics with photoshop should be easy, just solid white characters and icons in a relatively straight manner.

I may not have Premiere, but I did something quite similar using Paint.net, I suppose. (Don't laugh)

What's there to laugh at? Looks good. Just need the tiny white line going across horizontally.

Thank you guys! I think I'm happy with what I've learnt from this thread, it's been a pleasure to learn how to do even a simple VHS-style effect. :)

Welcome. That's a good one too. I see you added the horizontal line. I'd prefer the line to be white but VHS tapes work in odd ways so it looks good either way.

If want to add a more analog look you should look into creating some compostie artifacting.

Be it PAL or NTFC artifacting.

That will help smooth out some of the sharper lines that makes the picture look identifiably digital.

Yeah, for sure. I have no clue just yet on how to do that in Paint.net, but I'm sure there are ways! :)

Remember, old analogue video are interlaced, encode raw footage in 480i ntsc format, upscale frame rate to 60fps and then import the encoded one and set project property to 29.97 (3000/101)

why everybody post the spec of their rig here? i dont! cuz its made of mashed potatoes!
