Welcome to Week 27 of the LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here.

Thank you to @WoodenMarker for suggesting the challenge.

This week the challenge is to make a workstation worthy of the title "hot, overpriced trash bin" or "amazing, innovative, revolutionary godsend." If you think, for example, that Quadro cards would be better than FirePro, you can make that change. It should still be workstation oriented though.

Budget: $3,000

Peripherals: No

Monitor: No

Submissions: January 10th through 13th

Voting: January 14th through 16th

Never done this before so if something screws up about the BBCode Markup Sorry in advance.
My justification for going for using a pair of R9 290's with waterblocks is that mantle will indeed support increased and larger capacity and qualities running 4K+ resolutions, heat being a problem of the R9 290/290X edition lower thermal throttling will allow the cards to run as hot as they can get whilst been cooled efficiently. I had watercooling in my budget.
Compatibility with watercooling on the motherboard, originally I was thinking of using a asrock 1150 extreme 11/AC the maximus 6 formula was $50 US dollars cheaper and had the integrated mosfet cooling in the event the cpu's would run too hot.

So I know you do this every week or month or so but do we get anything...

I'm reserving this spot.

Unfortunately, there are no prizes. I tried to get a badge for the winners when badges first came out, but the mods didn't want the forum to be flooded with winners of this contest + the build logs.

P.S. That was fast . I published and you had posted before I finished editing.

@CornOnJacob I forgot but is it also necessary to have any software since this is all mainly technology/product based? Do they have to fit exactly?

I was going to post on a previous week but I didn't have the time then :(

  • On pcpartpicker I believe there is a drop-down in the upper right that lets you change your country. You can switch to the US temporarily if you want everything to be in USD.
  • Yes, cookies would be nice.
  • If you want to OC 2 290s along with the CPU, I don't think 360mm worth of rad will be able to cool it that well. It should still be better than the built-in cooling on the Mac Pro, but you won't get the amazing temps typical of watercooling.
  • Your post was fine and everything pasted in correctly :)

You don't need to include any software--this is strictly about the hardware configs.

I wasn't saying not use a Xeon witch is fine but get one with on-board graphics or higher clock speeds.  Parts picker is saying that you could go with the Xeon E3-1245 V3 and still be within budget.

No point getting the 1245v2 because there is a graphics card.

That's fine. On a separate note, you cannot vote for yourself. I won't disqualify you, but your vote does not count if it is for your own build.

2 way Crossfire and SLI are not supported by Mac OS X

Thank you! I had absolutely no idea that they weren't.
