Gaming CPU Needed

So I am trying to upgrade my PC and have a question about processors

 

Current Specs:

Motherboard" ROG Hero VI

CPU: Intel i5-4670K 4Cores  (Haswell) 1150 Socket

RAM: 32GB RAM DDR3 Cosair

Graphics Card: Gigabyte 1070ti

Windows 10 Pro

Storage: Samsung Evo 550GB SSD, Westerndigital 3TB Blue HD

 

What I trying to do: I use my Rig for gaming but I also want to be able to run some virtual machines off of it. I am finding out running a VDI is difficult because my rig is a little out dated.

 

I want to know should I look at AMD Threadripper or Intel I9. Which works the best as I have been a little out of touch with computers CPU. I will also be looking at a new motherboard as well and have questions about M2.

Grab a second hand i7 4770K - i7 4790K - i7 5770C if you wanna do it on the cheap, if not a Ryzen 7 2700

A consumer ryzen 7 or consumer i7/i9 will be enough.

Don't waste money for the sake of wasting money.

Personally, I don't think Threadripper will be good for you. If you're wanting to focus on games, and do VMs on the side, you'd benefit from a high single core performance CPU, with many cores to boot for the standby VMs. 

 

I'd recommend the 9900k. Up to 5.0ghz boost out the box, and have 8c16t. An amazing CPU. 

 

IF you find the total price tag too Mich for an i9 + z370 setup, you can choose a 2700x and go from there. The 2700x is a good, solid, cost effective way to get 8 cores on a solid platform. Gaming would be maybe 10%-15% behind, depending on the game, GPU, and resolution. But still, 8 cores for cheap? I'd choose it if I were trying to keep costs down. 

 

I just bought a 9800X and a Gigabyte Gaming 7 Pro.... So, I'm not worried about prices.
