NEED OPINION ON HEATSINK

Noob Builder

Hi so as you can guess by my username I am not the most experienced builder, however I feel like I did a good job building my first PC. I wanted to ask if the CoolMaster Hyper 212 EVO was going to be a powerful enough air cooler for the Intel i7-9700k at stock and then O.C. Help me out please!

Stock will work, and since the cpu is soldered, you might be able to OC a bit if you get a good chip

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

No that's a cooler you use for things that is bearable with the Intel 73w stock cooler, just somehow didn't. To overclock a 9700k you will be looking at big heatsinks like the Cryorig R1 (Ultimate > Universal), Noctua NH-D15 or be quiet Dark Rock Pro4. On liquid side of things there's the Corsair H110i / H115i or EVGA CLC 280 or NZXT X62

You really should prioritize getting a better GPU rather than CPU and Cooler, etc. Because this just isnt nice to look at in terms of cost balancing and prioritizations

Why 32GB of memmory? Why overkill PSU?

There is a lot i want to nitpick here

32 GB of ram just so i never have to worry about getting more because I host servers sometimes and want to have a speedy server. Also what do you mean the motherboard shouldn't have been made to fit the 9000 series CPU? And the 970 because I don't feel like spending upwards of a grand for a GPU, just don't have the money for it right now.

VRM is what you would call shamefull for the price they charge for the motherboard and what kind of product category they place it in. Also you cant really overclock on it.

What servers? You can get better value and use of cheaper hardware like the 2700x whoch handles multithreaded loads better with it actually having SMT/HT.

You can spend a lot less than a grand and get a much better experience than the 970 offers.

weak VRMs. VRM refers to components used to power components, in this case I'm talking about those powering the CPU. They are too weak for the 9700k.

He meant upgrading the 970 along with the CPU and mobo and cooler after shaving off cost from other places.

So are you saying they aren't compatible or is my CPU just going to be running much lower on stock settings compared to other motherboards.

What CPU did you have?

Also even then it makes more sence to spice it up. Get a 8 core 16 thread CPU for VMs and Servers etc and still have leftover for GPU of neccesary.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 7 2700 3.2 GHz 8-Core Processor  ($269.00 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI - B450 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($114.99 @ B&H)
Memory: G.Skill - Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  ($229.99 @ Newegg Business)
Total: $613.98
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2018-12-07 18:44 EST-0500

Something like this leaves a lot more open to GPU upgrades and fulfill your requirements easy. Even though i still find 32GB of Ram being silly as im shure 6GB of Ram out of 16GB is lore than enough for your VM/server

the VRMs just run uncomfortably hot, possibly throttling the CPU back to keep itself alive.

If you came from the 5820k or 5930k there's no need for a new platform yet, just get a 5960X or 6900k. With hyperthreading they are both faster than the 9700k

@GoldenLag 5000k are all 6 core 12 thread Haswell-E parts

I do not have a full name and yes it was a 4 core 8 thread, and just their performances compared to intel.

Ik that, but from what i could gather he had a quadcore.

Though he has a lot better options open for him
