Awesome!!! Because I need to build a new workstation computer for work and I was looking at the 2950x and saw that the 3xxx series is coming out possibly soonish and was really bummed to hear this as the cpu is 900 bucks plus another 400 for the motherboard....and the thought of having to pay that all over again in 5 months *gags*. Thanks you guys!

TR 3xxx won't be out for at least 9-10 months, the 2xxx series just launched a couple of months ago. If you need a machine now there's no reason to wait. Make sure TR is good for your workload though.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

9-10 months. That is good news. Yes, 2950x is good for my workload. Better then the 7900x and really any cpu's from Intel. Unless I want to spend 2k ....and even then that 2k Intel cpu is not even better or marginally better in most tests.

Threadripper is sqedualled to be launched in autumn next year. so you got plenty of time on your hands. also you can probably grab a 1950x and overspend on the motherboard to buy something like the MSI MEG Creation. which has the most overkill VRM for the CPU.

Will the 3xxx series threadripper CPU's be compatible with x399 motherboards?

Yes but you'll probably want an X599 chipset to go with them if it has PCI-e 4 and that's important

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Aye, a friend of mine who has a 2950x and the MSI MEG Creation suggested doing just that. But seeing as how the x499 boards will be launching next year and I am going to buy the 2950x I will settle for a $400 motherboard or something right around there. That MEG really does look great tho.

the MEG put anything Asus has put out to shame. hopefully they continue these Godtier motherboards. like the Z390 Godlike (limited edition board)

What board would you recommend getting besides the MEG for the 2950x? What's the closet runner up or competitor?

havent payed too much attention to who has the best. though as @Streetgurumentioned, you might wanna wait out for the PCIe 4.0. its kinda a huge improvement for what you can do with expansion cards.

Unfortunately I can't, I need a new workstation computer and I'm on a deadline. I'll just have to wait to upgrade later.

MEG or one of the higher end boards. take a look at Gamernexus, they have some videos up or i think it was buildsoid had a motherboard overview

or just watch this.

I was planning on getting a 2950x for my christmas build....but I've done a ton of research into the x399 motherboard and there's still a lot of problems with them. Even the latest motherboards created for the refresh 2xxx series DO NOT COME with the updated BIOS for the 2xxx CPU's so you literally can't even boot up until you flash the bios. I'm really sketched out by AMD and quite honestly appealed they are selling a $600 motherboard (meg creation) that I have to flash the bios just to use a cpu the motherboard was designed for! This is simply unacceptable. None of the reviewers are being honest in their builds or tests regarding the 2xxx series motbos and never mention that you have to flash the bios in order to use it! It's sad to see that these reviewers have sold out to AMD. There's many problems with the x399 motherboards from what I've read and people I've talked too and threadripper needs a lot more time to mature before I could feel comfortable using it. Which is unfortunate as I really wanted to get the 2950x. I will be buying the i9-7900x instead because we know which motherboards work the best and what if any problems there are with the mobos and/or CPU. I feel that 2xxx series and their mobos have shown that amd still has a lot of issues and the hype is not real.

Im just saying this. All TR4 motherboards have the ability to update BIOS without a CPU so all of the above you mentioned is a non-issue. Also there are mobos with the correct BIOS.
