Upgrade neede (FX) but I can't decide on which CPU and MBO.

I'm on an 8-core FX with an AM3+ board, 16GB of ddr3 and a Radeon 380X 4GB.

I need to upgrade. Prices in our country are amongst the highest in Europe (although the income is amongst the lowest).

My budget is limited. I can afford an CPU, MBO and 16GB RAM at this time (my budget is like $550-$600 US which gets me roughly $400-$450 of parts when looking at the US prices).

 

I am considering Ryzen. The 1600X, 2600, 2600X, 1700 and 1700X (from $200 to $300).

The board will probably be an MSI with decent VRM like the B450 Tomahawk or even better. Less spent on CPU = more $ for the board.

And the RAM, Ill go with 16GB ddr4 3200 CL16, can't afford better (roughly $200). Samsung B-die.

 

Intel is not an option, an i5 8600K costs $350 USD, adding the RAM (slower, 2666) and almost no cash is left for a board.

 

The primary upgrade is due to Battlefield V which runs like a dead cow on my FX 8300 (4.4 OC), the CPU bottleneck is huge.

 

Next upgrade path (in a year to two) - a 1440p 75+ Hz monitor and a new GPU (hoping for Navi).

If you want to spend a little bit more on the motherboard, go for the Tomahawk. I have it, and I can vouch for it's reliability and performance!

Also, you don't really need 3200Mhz RAM. Just add that money towards your GPU. The difference in performance between 3000Mhz and 3200Mhz is really minor. IMO it's not worth it, especially if you are held back by budget.

You can also cut your budget by choosing R5 2500 instead of 2600 if your goal is gaming.

B450 Pro4 is not a good board, I won't go with it. Something like the B450 Tomahawk is the lowest I would go.

I do plan on upgrading to a Ryzen 3700 or something like that, let's say in 2 years.

 

DDR4 3000 isn't even available, and those that are, do not differ in price compared to 3200.

 

I won't go 8 threads, has to be more than on the FX. XD

My goal isn't only gaming, I do stream sometimes and even do some heavier work on the system.

If you already know what you are going to do, I am not sure why/what you are asking about here?

 

B450 Tomahawk is an excellent motherboard, and if you can afford it, go for it.

 

Also, umm, you do realize that Ryzen 5 2600 is a 12 thread processor, right? There is a huge difference between FX 8300 and Ryzen 5 2600. I think you are underestimating how much difference a few generations can make in a CPU.

I'm not sure about what to choose for the CPU, but it won't be a 4-core 8-threads Ryzen (2500 that westport17 recommended) since those are already obsolete.

I have a problem choosing the CPU.

 

For the board, I know which have decent VRM-s. (Gamers Nexus, Buildzoid aka Actually Hardcore Overclocking, Hardware Unboxed and others)

 

For the difference against FX, even a Ryzen 3 1200 is a better choice, especially for gaming. I am not referring to that. For my needs, a 6-CORE is the bare minimum.

I simply can't decide; a good B450 board and a Ryzen 8-core or a good enough X470 board with a Ryzen refresh 6-core, or...

I would have upgraded the graphics card, I am rocking FX-8370 & Vega 56. But since you sound like you need more CPU power then Ryzen 5 and a chipset cabable to OC and decent enough VRM to handle a next gen chip if you wanna go all in in terms of power. (edit: later that is)

I don't even want to think about how huge of a bottleneck an FX 8-core would be to a mid-range card like the Vega 56 or a GTX 1070ti, such a criminal bottleneck, having the performance of a GTX 1050 to an RX 570 depending on the game and resolution...

Please monitor your GPU usage in games, please upgrade your platform it would give you a 100% boost or even higher WITH the same GPU.
