RTX 2070 MSI Gaming Z dead on the second day?

Hello,

Hear me out...

I bought the RTX 2070 Gaming Z a couple weeks ago and the first day I used it, it ran like a dream, no problems at all. Turned the computer off, and on the next evening, played for about 20 mins and the entire screen turns to a static mess of artifacts and the computer crashes. (See pics) Computer tries to reset by itself but the static mess keeps re-appearing on the boot screen and the computer tries to reset again over and over again. Sometimes BSOD...

Thought to myself, "the GPU is defective, oh darn!" and sent it back with Newegg. Got a second one and threw it in my computer. Worked like a dream! And then...

Second day, same story - gamed for 20 mins and same static artifact mess and whole computer crashes. Went and got a refund instead...

Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I refuse to believe that I'm so unlucky that I could get two consecutive defective cards. All my other components (listed below) are all reasonably brand new (bought within 4 months). Could something else be wrong or am I cursed?

(Please be nice, kinda new to the whole PC building thing)

Current System Specs:

Intel i5-8600k CPU (OC to 4.7Ghz)

MSI z370 Tomahawk Motherboard

16Gb 3000 MHz G.skill Trident Z RGB Ram (2x8Gb)

EVGA G2 650W PSU

GTX 970 GPU

Things to consider:

* I am daisy-chaining my VGA cables, but I tried separate cable and the issue remains

* My current 970 works fine, even with a heavy OC.

* I did NOT OC the 2070 the second time (didn't even have a chance!)

* All my components are brand new.

* 2070 was running at a reasonable temp. (60C-70C)

* CPU was running at a reasonable temp. (60C-70C)

Don't have it, but useful to note:

I'm using a 1080 Ultrawide, no Gsync.

RMA 2070 space invader edition, you didn't break the card, it's faulty, see if they are willing to exchange for the gaming x trio

Haha couldn't negotiate a Gaming X trio but wouldn't that be the dream XD. (Wouldn't even fit in my case!)

Didn't want to go through the whole RMA process again, and they agreed for a full refund. No loss to me, just wasted time and effort. Maybe wait for the second or third batch in December?

Could I be so unlucky I got two defective cards, or could one of my other components be killing the 2070? Keep in mind my current 970 works fine, and all my other components are brand new.

What I don't understand is why it works for the first day, and then decides to bounce on the second day after I shut down the PC...

Any reasonable explanation for this?

(Thanks for the suggestions and comment btw, all super helpful) :)

there's no problem with the non-reference boards so far, could be different for the 2070 tho, it's a known issue for gddr6, maybe they use all the binned ram now on the 2080 ti and the problem is even worse for the 2070. The drivers are also buggy as hell and a month hell, holding my breath on my ref 2080 ti.

To be fair to micron, they are the sole supplier of the gddr6, so it's clearly rushed, the ram likely works fine at a lower frequency (not sure once the space invaders show up), but if they downclock it there's no point using it over gddr5x

Could this be a memory problem, that said, the GDDR6's fault that these problems are occurring? There is a forum regarding the 2080ti getting a new vendor for their GDDR6 memory - Samsung instead of Micron.

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1079421/geforce-rtx-20-series/rtx-2080ti-new-batch-gets-samsung-memory-/

Maybe should wait for next batch? Or could something else be wrong?

it's almost certainly a micron gddr problem at this point, but nvidia will never officially admit it as they don't want people to cherry pick the samsung cards, id recommend getting a card without the reference pcb at least.

Tried that, same result. But would this be a driver fault and if so why is this not affecting all Gaming Z users assuming they have the same driver?

My worry now is that something else in my system may be at fault. But is that possible given my 970 works like a dream right now?

Another thing to note: I have never seen this kind of crash where the entire system shuts down. Most crashes resulting from too heavy an OC involve only the application crashing (Correct me if I am wrong)

In any case, the second time I got the card, I neither OC the core nor the memory.

I'm really sorry to hear about your 2080ti. I sincerely hope you get a refund or a proper replacement.

Something about the whole 'dying on the second day' really bothers me. If it's defective, why not die on day one? How does one day of use without problem result in problems the next day?

Well Nvidia rushed productions and the drivers weren't ready maybe they slacked off on quality check and rushed out crappy cards.
