NVR + NAS on the same system?

Velcade

Is it a good idea to run my home server and my video recording from the same computer?

I'd have separate drives for each use; WB Golds for NAS and WB Purps for NVR.

Can the CPU handle both work loads at the same time?

I'm looking to have both in the near future and from a cost and space stand point I thought why not combine them.  Any reason not to do this?  Has anyone set up something like this before?

Yep you can do it. Id use vns here.

What systems and how much load you putting on it?

Id make a single storage pool for both uses.

@Electronics Wizardy At most it would be 7 cameras recording to it and 3 computers transferring to and from.  Single pool is a good idea.

budget? how much storage do you need? Do you want diy? The synology nas boxes can do this if you want prebuild, if you want diy, id get something like a new ryzen system or a used i5/i7 or xeon system(depending on how much you care about power, cost and some features.

I didn't know they had options to run both systems. I'll have to look into this.

I have the drives already:

  • 2x WD purp 6tb - NVR
  • 4x WD gold 6tb - NAS
  • 1x Crucial - MX500 500GB M.2 - boot drive

System build (yet to purchase):

  • Xeon E3-1225
  • Asus - P10S WS ATX
  • Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133
  • Case - Undecided I have an old Cooler Master Cosmos that would fit all these drives.

Budget (excluding drives): sub 1000 but could do 1500 if it really increases performance

odd parts choice. Ddr4 doesn't work with that cpu.

Do you want diy? id personally go with a synology or qnap here, small and saves power.

What os? Id look into proxmox here.

According to the product page it supports DDR4 mem.

Do you have a product suggestion for either Syn or QNAP?  I'm not sold on DIY; just thought it made sense.

the e3 1225 is a old chip, like lga 1155, ddr3, basically the same as a i5 2400.

You may mean the e3 1225 v6, and in that case, don't get that, get a i3 8100 instead, cheaper about the same speed.

look at the ysnology 1817+. Add your own ram, its much cheaper. Hold 8 bays, so you can add more and has a good simple video recorder for ip cams.

@Electronics Wizardy That's it... I meant the E3 1225 V6.  I'll look into the 1817+

Thanks for the advice.
