I’d say you’d want atleast a 8600(k)

PC specs:

I7 8700

1x 8gb Ballistix Elite 3200MHZ

MSI Gaming Trio RTX 2080

G650M PSU

120gb Kingston SSD

3TB of HDD

NZXT S340 elite Black/Red

I have one ( which i can return) and a gtx 1080

The 8400 is adequate for the 1080. Unless you want to get hyperthreading (which helps in a selection of games believe it or not) or OC then get an 8600k or 8700k but otherwise it will suffice in 1440p or above, hell even at 1080p lol

What motherboard do you have? Also an i7 8700 if possible will give you alot of room for the future, minimum isn’t always the best option.

I also went with the 8700 because of hyperthreading and i'm switching to 1440p in a a year or two so cpu becomes less important there as well.

so the i5 8400 will start bottlenecking in newer games ?

It might start bottlenecking with newer games and it wouldn’t really last you long while an i7 8700(k) or i5 8600(k) will last you a lot longer and will be powerfull enough if you decide to get a new gpu.

Yes i went with an i7 8700 for the purpoe of content creation and having things like discord not degrade as much performance. And also future proofing.

Just stick with the 8400. It's not as bad as he makes it out to be although it's hard to predict the future. Worrying about "futureproofing" is alright but thinking too much of it will just get you confused and switch back and forth, i've been there xD

If you don't plan to upgrade for a long ass while then yes. If not then no the performance is negligible at 1440p and up especially for that price gap.

overclocking increases temps alot and might degrade life span getting an i7 8700 will be future proof and is good for photo editing and video editing if you ever want to get into that type of stuff.

Good choice. If you ever waver again then just do the research and look up benchmarks by yourself. Sometimes asking others can be unhelpful as we all have different opinions and standards.

He most likely won't keep it for like 8 years so It doesn't really matter now does it?

if the OP does want to keep it for that long then yes. get the 8700
