Creating a little server setup

where would you buy a server like r710 from? and how much are you looking at?

Normally I look for a r710 on ebay, in the U.S. there under about 200 depending on spec, normally a good conbination of cost, cpu power, ram capicity(and cheap ram), and storage.

That is only about 18in deep and is made for things like switches and patch panels.

A r210 or simmilar should fit, but those are normally limited in terms of cpu power and ram, and are more expesive for a given spec.

Do you need a rack?  a swithc and a server stacked in a corner seems like a much better solution here.

Alright, we shall settle on a rack type thing like you sent... would a patch panel and switch still fit in the rack though?

Yep you just have extra room for deep servers, but you don't seem to have enough stuff to need a rack.

Then make a list of what you want in the rack first, and then make sure its deep enough and has enough U. Pick the rack last.

Normally deep racks are full height as there normally used with lots of servers, the small racks are just for onsite switch for a small area, thats why there isn't many small racks.
