Air cooler vs Liquid cooler for Ryzen 5 1600?

infern027

My CPU is kinda getting too hot at idle temps so I'm planning to upgrade my stock cooler for an AIO or a better heatsink.

for the air cooler - MSI Core Frozr L

AIO - Kraken X62.

I have my r5 1600 @3.75 with 1.35v at around 32 - 40 idle on Kraken x62 with a push pull in the Phantex Enthoo Evolve ATX.

Push pull not possible with my NZXT S340 Elite.

MSI cooler is just a fancy looking cooler with expensive price tag. Depending on how much you want to OC I would suggest something like a Dark Rock Pro 3, Noctua NH-D15. If you want to look cool the X62 you mentioned is solid and has RGB.

SPECS: Intel Core i5-4460 // PowerColor Red Dragon RX 480 4GB // 1x8GB DDR3 RAM // Delta 500AB-6A PSU // HyperX Cloud Stinger / Logitech G710+ / Logitech G502 / Xbox One Halo Guardian controller // LG 24M45H 1080p //

The x62 might be an overkill for this cpu, but its pretty but relatively bulky. Although id pick this over the crosshairs 280. The preformance gains from using a push pull is minimal at best. But this case has really bad airflow. (reason for mine) You will just just as fine with the 240 variant, or a 360 (cross or fractal) if youre gonna upgrade later. Remeber you will some Krakens coolers dont come with AM4 brackets, but you can request them for free on their website.

This is so pointless you can get 3.9ghz on the ryzen 5 1600 using stock cooling if your case and air flow are somewhat decent, save money from the cooler, get the ryzen 7 1700 instead and still overclock it to 3.8ghz~3.9ghz using stock cooling.

Ryzen limiting factor is not heat, it's it architecture as a whole that tops at 4ghz.

I could not get mine over 3.8Ghz, it just shut down and black screened.

I'm getting the MSI cooler for about $30 here in my country.

Dark Rock Pro 3 is not available here.

Noctua NH-D15 costs around $200 here.

An air cooler is fine for Ryzen, but don't buy the core frozr L. Overpriced and underperforming, just like everything else MSi makes. Get a CryoRig H7.

Ok, then. Get a Hyper 212 EVO - should b available everywhere because it's so popular for... some reason...

H100i v2 on my 1600X that sits at 4.0GHz daily without issue and never seens north of 60C. i am kind of disappointed in the overclocking potential of the ryzen chip after coming from a i5 3570k that sat at 4.6ghz for 5yrs.

What are your temps? Where are you shopping/located?

If that's the NH-D15 at MSRP, the Core Frozr L seems relatively well priced.

The X62 is a better cooler but the money is probably better spent elsewhere since the extra thermal headroom probably isn't going to get you a much higher oc.

LN2 cooling, delidding, and oc'ing experience. 4ghz is a common wall the 1600 hits but isn't a hard limit.

It's a bit worse than the Core Frozr L. Some of the reasons for why the Hyper 212 is so popular include the price, age, and the periodic refreshes with slight improvements.

I have seen some people point out the BIG air coolers and I agree their performance is on par with AIO's in most cases, but the one reason I suggest people move to an AIO in this situation are as follows:

An AIO can be much easier to fit in the case as you do not need to worry about a big blocking heatsink.

The AIO will put a lot less stress on your motherboard. I know most of these big air coolers come with a back support for the motherboard, but that only really helps if you have the board laying horizontal which is very rarely the case these days. You also have a much higher risk of it damaging the board when moved.

The AIO does have it's own downsides:

They can leak causing damage to components but this is VERY VERY Rare.

The pump can fail and cause temps to build up quick especially if gaming when it fails. Luckily though the water will still flow slowly even when the pump dies so you still have some cooling ability thanks to the thermal properties in that case.

AIO's are also generally more expensive than their air cooled counterparts.

All that being said if you do decide to go with an AIO.. I would recommend you pick up one of the expandable AIO's from companies like Switchtech or XSPC. The reason I recommend that is because these units will have better pumps and components which will make their performance better than your average AIO.. you can also add another radiator and water block for a GPU in the future if needed for a fraction of the cost of a custom loop. I just think the benefits of the expandable aio's is far too great to pass up.
