GTX 970 not performing

Hi all,

 

Recently my graphics card hasn't been performing like it used to just two weeks earlier. I am now dropping over 15% of frames on Youtube and Warframe is completely unplayable. I also noticed a drop when changing from am i7 4790k (all other specs the same) but most of that was fixed until recently. My GPU is running at 40-50% on Youtube and my screen will sometimes black out completely. I have tried reinstalling all of the drivers for GPU and AM4 chipset. I honestly don't know what is happening and I just want to be able to use my computer. Any thoughts?

 

Specs:

  • Gigabyte Geforce GTX 970 Windforce
  • AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
  • ASRock AB350 Fatal1ty mini-ITX
  • 8G RAM (I forgot what brand)
  • Corsair SF600 PSU
  • Corsair H75 CPU Cooler
  • Phanteks Evolv Shift Case

Didn't specify what you have done so far so with that you may have already tried what I am suggesting but here it goes:

 

1.Have you tried updating the drivers to the latest versions?

 

2.Before installing new drivers be sure to use:  http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html to completely uninstall all other display drivers on your computer so you don't install a driver on top of an existing one as that can cause serious problems.

 

3.Like stated above ensure the card is installed properly and ensure power cables on the card and psu are seated correctly.

 

4.Not sure if would make a difference buy check that your power plan is set to "Ryzen balanced power plan" or "High performance".

 

5.Install AMD B350 Chipset drivers from AMD website.

 

6.Get rid of any aftermarket overclocking software while your getting rid of drivers so you can ensure nothing is controlling the card in any way.

 

7.Make sure your running the latest version of windows https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10 link at the top of the page.

 

8.Do a malware / virus scan.

 

Hope this helps in someway but that's about all I got.

I just built a PC for my girlfriend with a Ryzen 1600 B350 MSI gaming pro carbon with a Asus Strix GTX 970 and it seems to run just great with everything on the latest drivers I was playing BF1, COD MW3 @ 60+ FPS on a 1440p Monitor Med/High Settings.  So it should be alright with your other hardware.

Doing anything in the background? What is the usage of GPU when you are just browsing, i.e. not watching Youtube?

I haven't tried re-seating my card. That's next when I have time (i.e: tomorrow night). Temperatures stay below 60C even under load.

Nothing else is using my card when I took those measurements. Browsing gets me 20-30% usage with one window.

1. They are updated.

2. I always select to do a clean install. Does that not get rid of enough?

3. I will try re-seating, but it started randomly without me moving the case at all.

4. Both my CPU and GPU are set to performance mode.

5. Already installed. I tried doing a couple clean installs as well.

6. I have no aftermarket OC software.

7. I am running the latest version according to windows update.

8. I've tried. I didn't notice any differences afterwards.

 

Thanks for your help! I'll try re-seating my card tomorrow night. I didn't think that my CPU was bottle-necking, but I'm no expert.

If nothing else works, I will think about doing that. I don't know if i have the tools or the skills to do that without fear of breaking something.

It would be really hard to break something, all you need to take it apart is a screw driver, then you just need something to take the old paste off with some rubbing alcohol, and of course new MX-4 or something

Did you reinstall a fresh copy of windows after the cpu upgrade or are you using the same than before?
