3 year refresh 8700k Build

reptileexperts

Here we go. Going to take roughly 2 weeks to get this done thanks to my work schedule and the case not arriving in time this weekend. But the rest of the parts arrived today or will arrive Tuesday with the case. . .

Current Rig:

Hero VII Mobo

i7 4790k OC'd to 4.9 daily, 5.0 benching

Swiftech H220x2 prestige

24gb Corsair Vengeance ram in red.

1070 Strix OC x 2 with asus HB SLI bridge

EVGA 750G2 with red extensions.

Phanteks Enthoo Pro M Acrylic

New Build:

i7 8700k

DeepCool Captain 360x RGB in White (giving it one shot, then going to hardline tubing for my swiftech and sending it back).

32gb Tridentz G Skills 3000 DDR4

Black-and-White Cablemod replacement cables for G2

3D Printed Cable tabs

Strix Z370E

Corsair Crystal 570x WHITE (new egg exclusive with updated power shroud)

From old build: EVGA 750 G2, 1070 strix oc sli, HB Sli Bridge

I wanted to update my CPU every 3 generations forward. Skipped Skylake, Kabylake, and now were at coffee lake so the hexacore bench marks looks GREAT for streaming. With my professional hobby, adobe premier and photoshop will highly benefit from it as well. Just updated the rest of the components over the course of the last couple months.

Alienware 34 Ultrawide 120hz 1440p

Logitech G910 Orion Spectrum V2

Logitech G903 with Power Play Mat

Still rocking - Blue Yeti Black out, and Logitech 922x Streaming webcam.

Started and amazingly finished last night. Going from a 4790k to the 8700k I was able to see a 4500 point increase in initial fire strike testing! I was able to bench at 5.01ghz on all 6 core, but the voltage required definitely had me uncomfortable.... But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Our cooler arrived to replace my swiftech cpu loop, only for the sake of the build scheme.

The glorious and horrible 570x Crystal in white. I love this case.  I also hate it. But the love is more than the hate. The white makes the rgb theme really take off. And the full glass sides made cable management a true task. So setting up the motherboard it was time to instal CPU RAM and mount it.

Time to get cables out and ready.

LRM_EXPORT_20171202_063347.thumb.jpg.63c11b8213efae23c108c449e5b75e9e.jpg

Instal the mobo, and and start running essential cables.

Next we needed to configure the massive white radiator which was attached to the case fans to make some of my life easier. The removable radiator mount helped accomplish this to a point.

Thermal Grizzly was the choice paste, as can be seen.

With the CPU cooler in place, some wire management on fan and pump cables, and it's timer to tackle power and cable management.

24463512_10155850393778428_550358194_o.thumb.jpg.9ce4c5e0b7f81745b26d006c545ce70f.jpg

I pulled my CPU from my old build, and started the process of connecting every cable that was needed. I ensured that I only left 2 sata lines open, and did not put any excess connections in. Due to the small wire hider for the back of the case, and the openness of the shroud. Management was EVERYTHING.

24321762_10155850393953428_1178220046_o.thumb.jpg.5db1517a9cbb8b2cb13e66a6a2121ddc.jpg

A little while later, I managed to get things to a comfortable level of management, heck, even decided to put an RGB strip down at the base of the backside just because it was clean enough.

24321767_10155850394073428_127420483_o.thumb.jpg.b9da87f89c2bf6228dcccd4efb1b41e3.jpg

First power up, everything lights up and CPU cooler goes into action. Time for bios, custom configs, a base over clock and this thing is ready.

Final thoughts.

Asus Aura lighting is very easy to use once the proper motherboard files have been installed. The ROG HB SLI bridge that is connected to the RGB header, absolutely plays horribly with the rest of the build lighting! The captain 360ex White RGB still has an unknown happiness level. The fan profiles absolutely need some custom work right out of the box, and the noise level is much higher than my swiftech H220x2. Cooling power really has yet to be determined. Right now the system is stable at 4.9ghz on all core with a core voltage set to 1.410 which is higher than I'd like. It would seem I definitely did not get the cherry pick of the CPU in the silicon lottery this go around, but I may still have some wiggle room as 5.0ghz was stable at 1.425v, but my temperatures reached 85. Once my paste settles, I should see the final story.

Yep. But it was an RGB AIO with a 360mm white radiator with mixed reviews and a 3 year warranty that covered your build if it forms a leak 100%. So, why not.

Few cards bench higher than them, and I bought them on release with mail in rebates and all they were around 370 USD each...

A very well done and respectable build. Only complaint I have is that the side panel for the cable side of the case is glass. Other than that, looks amazing. Also, what are those glass speakers you have called again? I was looking for them for a friend. (Trying to add as much glass to his build as possible) but I couldn't remember what they were called again.

Harmon and kardon Soundsticks II

Glass panel on the cable management side was definitely why I went with the 570x over the 560.

I upgraded from a 4790k, games did not see an improvement overall due to the resolution I play at, but streaming while gaming or recording while playing helped frame drops. If you're streaming enough to justify it, it's worth the upgrade, otherwise 7700k is a much cheaper and equally matching on bench test where single thread is at play.
