Is it bad that I limit everybody else's bandwidth?

yolosnail

Okay, we have a 40mbps VDSL connection for our internet so it's not the fastest but not exactly slow.

So when I was re-doing our network I created 2 different SSIDs for the WiFi, the main one I limited to 5mbps down and 1mbps up which is fast enough, but on the other I didn't put any limits on and haven't gave anybody else the password.

The physical network does not have any limits on it so things like the YouView box and the NAS have full internet speeds.

I don't want to be dealing with buffering when watching the high quality videos of Floatplane.

Am I selfish for doing this?

Are you paying the bill? if so no you're not selfish as people still get it for free.

If not and it is someone else paying the bill then hell fucking yeah you're being selfish since this is basically stealing from who's actually paying for it.

With most (modern) routers you can limit bandwith.Naamloos.thumb.png.8752c507047cfde3c29718324d43e233.png

We have 100/20 connection and I limited every single IP address.

If I don't limit it, TV will take 100% of internet speed for 0,5sec every 10sec. So that was very annoying because of lagg spikes in games.

Now I limited TVs to use max 20Mbps ... now it takes 20% of whole speed for 2,5sec every 10sec. Fine by me xD

Also limited computers, tablets and phones from other people in the house, so all devices (including TVs) can't use more than 80Mbps of internet speed. So 20 is like dedicated for me and my games, to avoid any horrible pings.

I just use a Draytek Vigor 2760. I can set up different WiFi networks and limit the bandwidth between them like @TobiZY shows

Didnt feel like responding to the rest of the people? Do you pay for the internet or even 90% of it? Do the other users know you are throttling them? If you answered no to all of these, them yes, its very selfish

Since he ignored commenting on who pays for the internet my money says 'No, he does not pay that bill'.

I don't directly pay for the bill, but I pay for the upgrade to the faster package. Yes, they know that I've limited the speed of the network.

So do you think limiting it down to 5mbps is too much?

Just stop beeing a dick about it wtf? Yes, 5mbps is too little, you cannot even watch netflix 4k with that... I mean I can see that someone increases their priotization, but not outright limiting others.
